NOTES for Stephen O'DANIEL:
John O'DANIEL, in his will, named Stephen O'DANIEL as his son. (Fx. C: 423), however, Stephen shed his Celtic O' and used DANIEL as his surname. Most records, including his will, show his name as Stephen DANIEL.
About 1780, Stephen married Ann "Nancy" Wise RATCLIFFE, daughter of Richard RATCLIFFE and Louisiana BOWLING.
Stephen received a land grant identified as Parcel 485 - O'DANIEL, STEPHEN 19 acres 15 June 1792 NH V:550 North side of O'Daniel's branch of Accotink Run adjacent John O'DANIEL, his father.
According to Fairfax Court records, Aug 19, 1799, p. 1628, Stephen DANIEL was to be commissioned a Lieutenant in the Virginia militia.
On 12th of February 1800, Stephen sold this 19 acre tract to Richard RATCLIFFE, his father-in-law, for eighty-five dollars and 50 cents "Current money". Apparently Stephen was allowed to continue living on this land, because in 1854, at the age of 94, "Stephen died at his home, called Airhill, near Centreville, Fairfax County, Virginia."; this being the 19 acre plot Stephen purchased adjoining the land granted to his mother (or step-mother), Nancy, in John's will.
Stephen left a will dated March 13, 1849 and proved March 20, 1854 (Fairfax Liber X, 183). From his will and the detailed land records book, BEGINNING AT A WHITE OAK, by Beth Mitchell, it appears that he had acquired a number of Fairfax plantations aggregating several thousand acres." He names grandchildren Richard Nelson DANIEL, John Hooe DANIEL, and Nancy Wise DANIEL, children of his deceased son Richard John DANIEL; daughter Jane Pearson ALLISON, and her husband James Gordon ALLISON; grandson Stephen Daniel FOOTE, only surviving child of late daughter Julia Ann JACKSON; grand-daughters Mary Elizabeth, Anne Catherine and Frances Eugenia, children of late son William S. (Steven) DANIEL, and son Robert Ratcliffe DANIEL". Pages 582 - 586, GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES, VOL. IV (W -Y and Appendix)
NOTE: The Last Will and Testament of Stephen DANIEL, below, was transcribed from a photocopy of Fairfax County, Virginia, Will Book X1, page 180. There are no editorial comments within the will. Stephen used parenthetical comments in his will, e.g., ("Called Airhill"). While this example looks odd, it is as written. The clerk recording the will surely should have written this as (Called "Airhill"). The transcriber used parentheses containing question marks when words or letters were not distinguishable.

I Stephen DANIEL of the County of Fairfax and State of Virginia, being weak in body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory do make and publish this as my last will and testament, in manner and form following, (that is to say) I give and bequeath unto my grand sons Richard NELSON and John Hooe DANIEL and my grand daughter Nancy Wise DANIEL, the children of my son the late Richard J.
