This message will not be new to Judy Trollinger, but I just would like to share my speculations and conclusions re Rachel Shelby, in light of what she has found and told us.

First of all, I don't see any reason to believe that the Rachel Shelby, daughter of Riceus Shelby [n.b.: "Recei", as per Judy, is the Latin genitive of Riceus, meaning "of Receus"], is the Rachel Shelby who came to America with Evan and Catherine.

When I first saw that "our" Rachel was born in 1721, I wondered why she would be (in that day and age) marrying a man (Phillip Pindall) so much younger than herself. Judy Trollinger has also speculated that "our" Rachel might have been born after Evan and Catherina moved to America, possibly around 1729 to 1731.

To me, this makes *MUCH* more sense.

This makes her 16 or so when she married John McFarland (much more likely than 26, in the 1700s!). It makes her about 24 at the time of her marriage to Phillip, the same age as Phillip instead of ten (10!) years older. It places her age at about 31 when her youngest child is born, again more likely than 41.

Finally, it means she is around 70 to 75 years old at death, instead of 80 to 85 years old.

Until somebody shows me evidence that "our" Rachel is, indeed, daughter of Riceus and niece to Evan, I'm going to continue to list her in our "tree" (see http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=thewilkinsons&id=I1156) as born circa 1730.

She had two female Children that were killed at a young age in a house fire. This is according to the manuscript written by John McFarland Weltner.

Hello Shelby(s),

Can anyone add info to the following?
Church: Part I First Presbyterian Church Marriages
1702-1745 Philadelphia, PA
old style monthy, day, year
Page 14: 4,8,1741 ROBERT COCKBURN and RACHEL SELBY

THEN: Pennsylvania Archives, Second Series, Vol II
Page 60: Dec. 1747 COBURN RACHEL amd John McFarland.
(COBURN is the phonetic spelling of COCKBURN)

THEN: From this site and other sources (online and books),
I find that the widow of Capt John McFarland married about 1756 Capt Phillip Pindall.

I believe that my Rachel "Selby" and husband Robert Cockburn had at least one son, also Robert Cockburn for whom there are several deeds and other records in Frederick Co VA and later in Berkeley Co VA. There are records of "Capt. McFarland" in Berkeley Co VA as well as for Capt Phillip Pindall. Rachel Pindall is buried in Flagg Meadow, near Morgantown WV.

I will really appreciate your views, opinions, info about Rachel. She may be the sister of Evan Shelby, Jr who (m) Catherine Morgan or Evan Jr's cousin and daughter of Rees Shelby. OR not a SHELBY at all but truly a SELBY.
Peggy

Info found at this site: http://www.combs-families.org/combs/marriage/dar-100.htm

Although she was clearly associated with the family of Evan Shelby, people who have done extensive research on this family have indicated she is actually the daughter of a Rees Shelby. Her very close association with the family would lead me to believe that at the least she may have been an immediate cousin and that Rees and Evan were probably brothers. Possibly Rees died in Wales and therefore Rachel immigrated to the new world with her uncle and his family... Just a theory..
