Individual:
Possibly came to New York in 1776, and moved to Union Co., SC. They were reportedly aligned with the Whig or Patriot cause during the American Revolution. Other researchers in this line include George Thompson of Houston, TX; John Keys Knox; Paul Woodard of Ft. Worth, TX. John Keys Knox wrote that he had seen the will of James Thompson naming sons James and William, but I have not seen this will. Not all of this tree is proven, so use with caution and always verify other's notes when possible.

Joshua had 10 children. James was administer of his father's estate. About 1835 James and Sarah moved to Dekalb Co AL then later moved to Blount Co AL.
The above is included for the possibility that this Joshua is a brother to William Thompson.
From George Thompson:
William Thompson, born Abt. 1785 in Union Co., SC; died in Pickens Co., SC ?. He was the son of James Thom(p)son and Unknown. He married Unknown. Settled on 12 Mile Creek 8 miles north of Pendleton Village. Left South Carolina and killed in an Indian uprising in Alabama.
R. W. Simpson wrote an article about Robert Thompson, stating that Robert was a son of Charles Thompson, a grandson of William, a ggrandson of James Thompson from Ireland. A descendant of R. W. Simpson wrote to John Knox in 1999, that R. W. Simpson was a most thorough researcher, very "meticulous". R. W. Simpson was the first president on the board of Clemson University, a lawyer, and an author.
