Dear Mr, Miley:
My highly esteemed Judicial Collegue, the Honorable Clement F. Haynsworth, Jr. has very kindly forwarded the information which you were good enough to obtain with reference to Col Robert Anderson Thompson.
I am very much interested in Col., Thompson because it appears that he is of the same family of Thompsons from which I am descended on the mother's side. My grandmother Worrell was Nancy Elizabeth Thompson and they came to Choctaw County, Mississippi, from what is now Anderson (then Pendletona) District, South Carolina.
I also might say that my Grandmother Coleman one a Bruce, Her father, Berry Bruce, was born on Wolf Creek north of Easley, in what is now Pickens County.
As an interesting and rewarding hobby, I have made several trips to Anderson, Pickens, Clemson and Walhalla in search of further information on my ancestors.
It was indeed good of you to assist me, as you have done, and should I be able to respond in similar fashion, I would consider it a pleasure.
With best wishes I am
Sincerely yours,
James P. Coleman

Dear Mrs. Keys
I now have before me the letter which you wrote to Honorable J. Pat Miley on October 17 concerning Colonel Robert Anderson Thompson.
In this connection, for your information, I herewith enclose copies of the letters which I have today written to Judge Haynsnorth and Mr. Miley.
My thanks go out to you for the information which you have furnished and which will be of vital assistance to me in the research which I have been doing for a number of years on my Bruce and Thompson ancestors who came from that area to Choctaw County, Mississippi, some of them by way of Alabama.
I have been trying to find an opportunity to get to Walhalla, which I have visited on previous occasions, but it seems that our judicial burdens get worse instead of better. Therefore, I do not know just how soon I may be able to get there.
You probably already have a copy of it, but I herewith enclose an excerpt from the Cyclopedia of Eminent and Representative Men of the Carolinas. This resume, no doubt compiled from information furnished by Col. Thompson himself, states that his grandfather, William Thompson, died in Alabama. [handwritten insert here "KILLED BY INDIANS"]

If not too much trouble to you, and I know it will be of some trouble, I would appreciate very much if you could send me any information you may have on William Thompson.
My great-great-great grandfather William Thompson was born in Belfast, Ireland, came to Union County, South Carolina, and was killed by Indians in Alabama in 1816 or 1817.
I note in your letter to Mr, Miley that you were married in 1916, so I divine from that that you have been blessed with what has now become a long life, in which you had the opportunity to see and observe much,
Thanking you for your consideration, I am
Respectfully yours,

Dear Mrs, Keys
It is a marvelous thing that a lady can live for eighty years and yet retain her mental faculties and physical strength to such a degree that she can write and compile such a comprehensive report as just
sent me concerning the Thompson family.
You can have no idea how deeply I appreciate this, It is most valuable in my efforts to learn more of my great, great grandfather, William Thompson, who Lost his life to the Indians while Alabama was still a territory.
Also, highly interesting within itself, is that I am well acquainted with the Thompson family mentioned in your letter, who lived on Twelve Mile. He was a neighbor to my great, great grandfather Bruce. Perhaps you know that some of these Thompsons moved to Habersham County, Georgia, where Grandfather Bruce moved to in 1820, My great grandfather Bruce had a son named Thompson, whose son was Sheriff of Choctaw County while I was District Attorney.
Really, it is a small world.
I hope you have a nice visit to Washington at Christmas, and that you will always be assured of my gratitude for your kindness.
Respectfully yours,
James P. Coleman

Subject: Thompson's of SC, GA, AL, MS
Hi all,
I am trying to find the children of William Thompson and Elizabeth Prewitt. Elizabeth was the daughter of Dudley Pruitt, Sr. and Ann. She was born in South Carolina in 1778. She married first, William Thompson. They had twelve children. William was killed by an Indian in the Bibb County, Alabama area around 1817. I believe their children were born in South Carolina, Georgia, and maybe Alabama. After William's death Elizabeth married J. Pierson. They had three more children. Sometime after
William's death, Elizabeth and family moved to Pickens County, Alabama. And sometime after J.
Pierson's death, Elizabeth and family moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi. I believe she was living with Elijah Thompson at the time of the 1840 census. I am looking for proof that he was her and William's child. I would also like to know their other children's names as well as the names of the children of her second husband. I know one of those children was named William J. Pierson. He too had moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi and lived down the road from Elijah.
Any information on these lines would be appreciated.

Janice -
Looks like the ol' Judge was quite a fellow. He WAS Governor of Mississippi from '56-60 and was quite well known. Seems he was something of an author too. In addition to the Coleman book referenced in the following paragraph I just pulled off the net, he wrote a book titled "The Bruces of Choctaw County
Mississippi". The Judge mentioned the Bruces in his letter to Louie Key's wife, and James W. Featherstone Thompson's 2nd wife was Alice A. Bruce according to what Louie sent me back in '98.
-------------------------
The Charles City, Virginia line of Robert Coleman was compiled by James P. Coleman, former Governor of Mississippi, now deceased. His book, "The Robert Coleman Family From Virginia to Texas, 1652-1965" is available on microfilm through the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. The Colemans in this line who migrated to other areas settled mainly in the Carolinas before spreading westward from Georgia to Texas. If you suspect your line might descend from the Charles City Colemans, please study the microfilmed book for clues.

I'm thinking and hoping that this all may lead us somewhere. I also got an email in reply to a postcard I sent over the weekend trying to locate Kent L. Townsend who wrote that message on Rootsweb in 1998 about William Thompson husband of Elizabeth Prewitt (sp. Pruett in the R.W. Simpson book) killed in
Ala. in 1817. I sent him an email back detailing what I knew and suspected and hoping he may have something concrete to share with us. George Thompson gthompson@houston.rr.com
