Source: Max D. Henderson, PO Box 354, Des Arch, AR 72040-0354. Max wrote that William was educated in 1866 in medical school. He became a prominent medical doctor in Cotton Plant, AR, and owned at least 40 acres of land in section 32, E1/2, NE of Richland Twp, Monroe Co., AR. His name was found on p. 7 in School District #32 personal tax records at the Monroe County courthouse, where he was taxed for 5 horses, 3 cattle, 15 hogs and two pleasure carriages. The following was from "History of Arkansas" (Book in the State Archives of prominent persons), p. 820: Dr. W. D. Powell, planter and physician, Cotton Plant, AR. The third living child born to Benjamin and Eliza (Fowler) Powell, owes his nativity to Henry Co., TN., where his birth occurred in 1833. His father was a native of NC and was a mechanic and architect by occupation. He left his native state in 1820, journed to TN, purchased land and followed farming for about twelve years. In 1831 he married Miss Fowler, who bore him eleven children, four sons and seven daughters, seven of whom are now living (date of article unknown), Thomas A., Joseph D., W. D., Helen (now Mrs. John Kibble), Georgia Ann (wife of Allen Hill, Mollie (wife of George Bell), and Jimmie. Mrs. Powell was also a native of NC and immigranted to TN with her father in 1818. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Benjamin Powell and family moved to Marshall Co., MS in 1854, and here he died in Marshall County of that state on Sept. 15, 1889. He was a member of the Baptist church and was a soldier in theCreek War. Dr. Powell began the practice of medicine in 1866. He married Minerva A. Shoffner, a native of TN, who bore him three children. Only one, Georgiana (Helen), now living. Mrs. Powell, died in 1869, and Mr. Powell was marraried a second time to Miss Lythia A. Wardwell, a native of IL and the fruits of this union were two children, Minnie, born Apr. 15, 1873 and Lillie M. born May 18, 1875. Lythia A. Wardwell Powell died Dec. 22, 1876. In 1881, Dr. Powell was married a third time to Mrs. Mahala Ann Maria Bill, daughter of William L. Eddins of Shelby Co., TN. The fruits of this union were three children, only one of whom is living, William Oscar Powell. Dr. Powell was in the late (Civil) war, enlisting in the calvary, Monroe Regiment, Parson's Brigade in 1862. He served until after the surrender at Fort Smith, and then returned home to Marshall Co., MS. He immigrated from MS to AR in 1869, purchased 160 acres of land and has about 80 acres under cultivation. He is progressive in his ideas, and is one ofthe leading farmers in this section. As above stated, he began the practice of medicine in 1866, and this he has since continued in connection with farming. He is a clever, genial gentleman, and in his political views affiliates with the Democratic party.
