Individual:
Adam Fisher was a veteran of the War of 1812. His pension records say he was 5'7", stout build, dark hair, blue eyes. He served as a private in Capt. John Link's Co. 32 Reg., in Augusta Co., VA beginning Aug 22, 1814, discharged at Charles City Courthouse Dec. 27, 1814. According to the book "First Settlers of Robb Township, A History of Posey Co., IN", written 1886, he received a musket ball in the fleshy part of his thigh, a wound he mentioned in his pension application. This service was under Gen. Harrison in 1811 at the battle of Tippecanoe. He applied for and received 80 acres of land Sept. 1850 for his service. Adam was the first blacksmith in Posey Co., IN. Prior to living in Indiana, by 1824 this family had moved to Pittsburgh, PA., where Adam worked as a glassblower. Thereafter, they lived in Boonsville, PA before moving to Posey Co., IN.
1830 Southern Indiana was a real pioneer state of dense forests, muddy rivers, and unpredictable roads and bridges. On the unpaved city streets pigs and sheep were free to move about. It was also a time of cholera and malaria. Here is information from the 1840 Posey Co., IN census p. 649: 1 m 5/10, 1 m 30/40, 1 m 50/60; 1 f 5/10, 2 f 15/20, 1 f 50/60. Adam is not listed on the 1850 Posey Co., IN census with his family, cause unknown. On the 1860 census, he is on page 16 Robb Twp., Posey County, PO Stuartsville. The 1870 Posey Co., IN census, New Harmony Twp., shows Adam living with daughter Louisa and her husband Patrick Endicott's family. This census data indicates that Adam cannot read nor write.
Adam's second wife, Salome (Schnee-Duell-Abney) Fisher, filed for his military pension benefits after he died in 1877. She was granted a pension for his service, Widows #18580.
