Individual:
U. G. was difficult to locate on the 1920 census. Finally I found him in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, OK. He was living at 618 Broadway St., house 92-102. The census was taken on Feb. 4, 1920. U. G. was listed as Eugene (well, that's close to U. G........) MALDIN. He was 18 years old born in OK, a laborer for Rock Island Company. His wife was Eula, 17 years old, born AR, father born MO, mother born AR., and Louis 7/12 months. Living next door to them was John Denson at 616 Broadway. He was 32 years old (b. MS-MS-MS), with wife Lily 21 years old (b. OK-IA-TX) and Ellen Denson 1 yr., 8 months old. U. G. Mauldin's mother lived down the street at 404 S. Broadway St. with her (2nd?) husband, Richard Lackey.
His son, Louis Grant Mauldin and he had been estranged for several years (by the 1950's), and were barely on speaking terms when Louis died. U. G. and Eula divorced after Marion Frances (Aunt Pug) was born. My mother, Ruth (Fisher) Mauldin told me that U. G. refused to pay child support and Eula had to threaten him with court action. So he agreed to take one of the children into his home and he and his second wife would raise this child. So Louis G. Mauldin went to live with his father and step-mother, after his father promised him new overalls and a little money. Mary, U. G.'s second wife, was several years older than he. They met at her home where he was working at her accounting books. She had two children of her own. Louis said she was very religious, what he called "straight-laced", and Louis did not get along with her. Louis was a troubled child, given to fibs and petty theft, and was not an easy child to raise. He did not finish school. When his step mother died, she bequeathed Louis $1.00 in her will.
U. G.'s obit is found in the "Shawnee News-Star" January 1, 1987. He home address was 115 W. Farrall. Services were set for 1pm Friday, Jan. 2, 1987 at the Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Curtiss G. Walker officiating. He was 85 years old when he died on Tuesday, Dec. 30, in a local hospital. This obituary said he moved to Shawnee about 1910 and in his youth worked for the Rock Island Shops. He was a retired painter and paperhanger. After retirement he raised poodle dogs and parakeets in his home, where he had lived for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Carl Whited of Shawnee, a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Howard and Minnie Mauldin of Oklahoma City, a stepson, Earl Wootan of Oklahoma City and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, several cousins including Pearl Nix of Tecumseh, and Charles Mauldin of Shawnee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Isom Mauldin in 1963, a son, Louis Mauldin and a daughter, Marion Mauldin.
