Individual:
When Sarah Malinda (Guinn) Stanford applied for a pension for her husband's military service in the Confederate Army, several letters were filed in Austin, TX on her behalf. One was from W. T. Stanford of Commerce, TX, P. O. Box 305, dated 01 Nov 1936 to "Dearest Lizzie: Just received your letter, and I was very glad to hear from you. I don't feel that I can give you much of the necessary information concerning the old Confederate Pension. I cannot say postively that Grandfather Stanford, father of James Franklin Stanford, went to war - I think that he stayed at home - but if he did go he went from Franklin County. At that time Frankfort was the county seat, but Russelville, AL is the county seat now. Your father (grandfather, James Franklin Stanford) went from the same place. Uncle John, Jim, and W. S. (my father) Stanford all went from that place too. That is all of the information I am able to give you. I was very glad to hear from you and would enjoy haring from you occassionally. I am living in Commerce, TX now - with a son and daughter. My wife (Nannie) died two years ago July 1st....(signed) Sincerely...W. T. Stanford"
Jesse and Cinthy A. Stanford: 1850 Dist. 6, Franklin Co., AL census, house 81-81.
