The Muse family was in the Carthage area by the year 1755. Between 1752 and 1755 James Muse, Sr., his wife, the former Sophia Pope, and at least five of his seven children moved from Prince William County, Virginia, to Cumberland County ( now Moore County ) North Carolina. It was the son, James Muse, Jr., that resided in vicinity of Carthage, North Carolina. In May 1762, he purchased 15 acres from Farquard Campbell on McClendon's Creek, and in November 1764, he received grants of 150 and 250 acres in the same area. James, Jr., was an active member of the community. In 1777, James, Jr., owned 2,435 acres of land in Cumberland County. James, Jr., died between June 1780 and January 1782. James, Jr., married (ca 1755 ) Charity ( maiden name unknown ) and their eleven children were all born in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Cumberland County was created in 1754 and Moore County in 1784 and the James Muse, Sr., family arrived by 1755- - so Muse is a real pioneer name to this area.
