| Ancestors of James L. Buckley, Jr. |
His ancestry is Irish from Salem, MA and southern from OK, AR, TN, KY, NC, SC, VA and MD. The Irish side includes Sullivan, Burns, Barrett, and Barry with most coming from County Cork, Ire.
The southern branches are mostly Scotch Irish and German. Surnames include the Scott, Pirtle, Brumley, Smith, Russell, Gould, Graham, Gleghorn, William Smith, Spradley, Coulter, Stuart,Reed and Payne families.
The Scotts have been proven back to Cecil Co., MD to Walter Scott abt. 1675. The Pirtle (Birkle in Germany) have been proven back to Hertenzarten, Baden, Germany in 1660's. Dwight Young has published a book on the Rockingham NC Pirtle family which also descended from Jacob Pirtle, the immigrant. Jim Pirtle has a web page on his descendants which are numerous in the Bolivar, TN area.
A book has been published on the Graham family into which John Matthew Gleghorn married. The Scott and Reed family are mentioned in the book, Carolina Cradle by Ramsey published by the Univ. of NC at Chapel Hill and covers the early settlement of western NC between the Catawba and Yadkin rivers.
Elizabeth Scott, dau. of John Scott II m. Benjamin Hardin IV in Rutherford Co., NC in 1782. The Hardin family has been extensively researched by Dr. Marion Craig of Little Rock, AR. Benjamin fought at the battle of Kings Mountain.
The Russells and Spradleys are ancestors of former President Bill Clinton as are the Payne family.
At this point in my research I am stumped as to proving John Payne was the father of Frances Payne b. 1794 Kershaw Co., SC who m. Bryant Spradley 1814 in Kershaw. He also b. there 1792, son of James Spradley and grandson of Bryant Spradley, and gr. grandson of Andrew Spradly who was probably the one in Goochland Co., VA in mid 1700's.
The Russell line probably comes from the John Russell of Onslow Co., NC who died leaving a will in 1753 naming sons James, Michael and Peter Russell. They left for the Cheraws in 1770's, now called Darlington Co., SC. James and Michael probably married the Gould sisters in Onslow (Mary and Ruth Gould, daus. of Severous Gould).
William Brumley and wife, Hetty (said to be a Counts) were b. NC in 1780 and 1788 respectively. No proof has been established on either's parentage.
