BIOGRAPHY: Carney William Bynum and his sons, Carney and Luther, were the founders of Bynum M anufacturing. Hence the name of the village of Bynum, which was built on the original Luke Bynum property. Carney's children were: Mary Bynum, 1835-1864, Chatham County, married Dr. W. D. Watson; Luther Bangs Bynum, 1838-1905, Chatham County, married in 1861 to Sophronia Jane Atwater, daughter of Jehiel and Martha (Warren) Atwater. Luther was 1st Sargent, Cavalry, CSA. Buried Mt. Plesant Methodist Church, Chatham County; Nancy Julia Bynum, 1839-1880, buried at Cedar Grove Methodist Church, married 1861 to Lt. John Fletcher Atwater, 5th Cavalry, 1839-1892, son of Rev. Wilson Atwater and Eleanor McCauley; Margaret Ann Bynum, 1841-1908, married in 1861 to Edmund Warren Atwater, 1842-1916, son of Jehiel Atwater and Martha Warren, buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, Chatham County; Carney William Bynum, Jr., 1844-1909, married in Orange County to Mary Catherine Atwater, 1850-1920, daughter of Jehiel Atwater and Martha Warren, buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, Chatham County; John Bynum who died as an infant.
BIOGRAPHY: From "Orange County Marriages 1775-1868:
A Kerney, son of a Kerney and Margaret Bynum, married Mary C. Atwater, daughter of Jehiel an d Martha Atwater, on 18 Sep 1867 by W. H. Bobbitt.(Bond no. 95235, code no. 073-01-053.) These may be descendants of this Carney.
