On 3rd Crusade, conquered Messina and Cyprus before arriving in the Holy Land. Took Acre 1191 with Philip II. Victory at Arsuf gained Joppa (1191). Concluded treaty with Saladin. Granted Cyprus (captured 1191) as fiefdom to Guy of Lusignan. On his way home was captured in Austria, held prisoner in germany 1192-1194 and released by Emperor Henry VI after payment of an enourmous ransom (1194). He returned briefly to England but died in France.
