Title: according to W R Ogg
Text:
Young Ogg was born in Noble County, Ohio near Barnesville. He served as a
soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. He married Martha Stamp.
After the Civil War, he sold his farm in Ohio, which was good rich land and
bought land in the Kaw River (Kansas River) Valley near Lawrence, Kansas. He
and his family moved to Kansas to settle on their new farm in 1869. His family
consisted of a daughter, four sons, and his wife. The sons were Robert, Frank,
George William, and Charles.
The author has heard his father, George Ogg relate their early difficulties as
Kansas settlers. Apparently the farm near Lawrence war bought sight unseen
and when the family arrived to take possession, they found that it was already
occupied by someone else who claimed title. Whether this person was an illegal
claim jumper or whether the land had been sold twice is unknown. At that time,
the times were still unsettled and dangerous (Quantrill's raiders had been active
during and after the Civil War. Records were inadequate and often missing.
Young Ogg, was unable to establish his title and at that time, "Possession was
considered nine points of the law. So they lost their farm. They moved to Butler
County in the spring of 1873 and took a land claim near Rose Hill where he and
his family settled. Later the family moved to Douglass and operated the
Metropolitan Hotel.
