Schroeder grew up inPlumfield, Illinois not far from West Frankfort and graduated from WestFrankfort High School. From a very young age she found an affinity formath and science, particularly physics. "My senior year in high school,I was the only female and there were 24 students in my physics class,"Schroeder recalls, "I was going to drop my physics class because I wasthe only female. And my physics instructor says, 'Oh, if you drop thenwe'll never get any females to take physics again, so I didn't, and thatprobably worked out pretty well." Schroeder started her collegiate career at John A. Logan College. She then transferred to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, earning notonly a BS in mathematics, but also an MS and a Ph.D. She credits herfather as the influence that set her on the road she walks today. "Igrew up with four brothers, and my mother thought that it was it veryimportant that my brothers go to college. It wasn't as important to herfor me to go to college," she remembers, "and my father always said Icould be anything I wanted to be." As the recently appointed Dean for Instruction, and the only administrator who still teaches courses at John A. Logan College, Dr.Julia Schroeder continues her commitment to education and personalgrowth. "I'm very excited about having this position," Schroeder said."It's a little cumbersome, now, I'm still doing the Associate Deanduties also until that position is filled." "So, we thought we would give this a try," Schroeder said. Schroeder said a couple of different classes will be offered in each time block. "What's more likely is that students will take a couple of FridaysOnly classes and then supplement that coursework with an online class, oreven a telecourse." ================================ ========================================= John A. HOMAN THE SOUTHERN CARTERVILLE - To get a leg up on their collegiate careers, an increasing number of high school students in the region are taking advantage ofdual-credit programs offered by their school and local community college. Julia Schroeder, vice-president for instruction at John A. Logan College, on Wednesday said all 11 in-district high schools were participating inthe dual-credit program, which allows talented students to earn collegecredits while in high school. "It's a good opportunity for students to at least get a good jump on their associate or baccalaureate degrees," Schroeder said. "And it savesparents money." Save indeed. Students do not have to pay college tuition for the dual-credit courses as community colleges are reimbursed through a state grant. In somecases, students may have to pay for books. Offered primarily to juniorsand seniors, dual-credit courses are those courses not offered at thehigh school. Such courses might include foreign language or scienceclasses, for example, or technology-based classes. The number of students participating in dual credit at JALC has skyrocketed from 227 in the fall of 2003 to 531 in the fall of 2004. ================================ ========================================= Julia grew up in a small community called Plumfield, in Denning TWP, Franklin Cty, Illinois. Richard Starets found this history of Plumfield: From Franklin County Illinois 1818-1997- by Turner Pub.; page 20: PLUMFIELD The old Shawneetown-Kaskaskia Trail crossed the Big Muddy in what is now Denning Township. Part of this trail was only a path in which a mancould walk or ride horseback. No wagon could travel. The FederalGovernment offered a tract of land to Charles Humphrey in 1811 to build aferry across the river at this point. He accepted the offer and built theferry. He operated the ferry until 1817. Congress had granted money tobuild a road and the road was made. There was to be a toll bridge overBig Muddy at the Dement's Settlement. This settlement was to becomePlumbfield. a stagecoach station, a post office and tavern, where atraveler could get a room and meals. In 1850, there was a general store,a tavern stagecoach stop, post office, a water mill on the river, twosawmills and two stave mills. Plumbfield had a population of over 500. The post office closed when Rural Free Delivery was established in 1915. With the coming of therailroad, the stagecoach was discontinued. Wagon trains became fewer. They only drove their animals to market. The sinking of Zeigler minetook more people from the area as they moved into Zeigler to work in thecoal mines. Plumbfield was declining rapidly. The most devastation camewith the powerful tornado, March 18, 1925, when the village wasdestroyed. Most of it was never rebuilt. Today there are a few houses. The toll bridge is gone along with most of the trail. The residentstravel into West Frankfort or Zeigler to shop and go to school.
