Notes
Text:
John L. Ashurst worked as a blacksmith by trade. Ashurst family migrated from Tennessee to illinois about 1832 and first settled in Menard Co.,Il. The family moved to Mason Co.,Il about 1833 locating in what is now Bath Township. He also worked as a farmer for several years prior to investing in the manufacture business with Robert Blunt. John Ashurst borrowed $4,000 from George Moody to establish the manufacturing of the SUCCOR GRAIN DRILL along with Robert Blunt. Upon Mr. Blunt's passing, the company was supervised by his son George Blunt along with Mr.Ashurst. This business was established about 1857 in Havana,Il. The company manufactured and sold about 100 drills each season which greatly enhanced the farming business. This information is extracted from a book, " History of Menard and Mason Counties",printed in 1879. John Ashurst received a patent for the improved grain drill on May 6,1884(Ashurst Press Drill-Patent Number 297,961). On Sep.1,1885, he assigned the patent to his brother,Lewis Berry Ashurst(Patent Number 325,583).
