[Buckles Family Tree 09-18-03.FTW]

Although not part of the family, Julius "Bully" Bailey and his family lived on the Joyner home site in a small hand built wooden house along with a fine team of mules which he used to tend crops which he shared with Joyner family. He had a "Smoke House" out beside the home where he would hang meats which were butchered from livestock that he maintained for the Joyner family. I remember how good this meat smelled when the smokehouse door was opened. When I was about five or six I would follow Bully up and down the rows in the field which he would be plowing with his team of mules. The furrows were as straight as arrows and were always just the right depth. Bully carried a bag of smoking tobacco in his overalls and a crumpled up brown paper sack in his back pocket. He would often throw the plow reins over the plow handles at the end of the row and proceed to tear a small rectangle of the brown paper, fill it carefully with tobacco from his pouch, and lick the ends to seal the home rolled cigarette. The smell of the tobacco when lit was perfume to me and I would tug at his overalls and beg for one of my own. He would generally roll one for me and let me have a few puffs. Howard R. Buckles, Jr.
