Individual:
1900 Census in Richmond Twp., Ashtabula Co OH Vol 6 ED #36 Sheet #7 entry #167 shows Harley age 21 servant/farmer living with the family of Julia Schultz. On the same page , entry #165 are his uncle and aunt Henry and Saphronia Smith Benton. His father had died in 1897 and he probably had been living with the Benton's in the interim.

We have not been able to find Joseph Smith or his son Harley in the 1880 PA or OH Census. A letter (9/97) from Lois' aunt, Carolyn Smith Prather, relates that Harley could not remember his mother and that he went with his father at an early age to Oklahoma which was then still the Oklahoma Territory. It did not become a state until 1907. Perhaps his father, Joseph, died out there?

In December of 1900 Harley married Lillie May Austin, daughter of Ransom B and Martha Luce Austin. Lillie's birth is recorded in Ashtabula Co Record of Births Vol 2 pg 2. Family tradition is that she was born in Pierpont, Ashtabula Co OH but her Ashtabula Co birth record states that she was born in Lucas Co. OH.

The family lived in the Pierpont/Andover area until about 1915 when they moved to Willard, OH. Harley ran a shoe repair and sales store in Willard at 12 West Maple St. In the early 1940's he sold the store and took up farming in the Greenwich area. Lillie died in 1961 and Harley in1963. They are buried in the New Haven Cemetery.
