This Appendix contains some information concerning other Alexander
families which came from the same parts of Scotland and Ireland withour own ancestry, and were no doubt of the same Scottish clanoriginally, but owing to their having emigrated at different times andto different places in America, their kindred cannot be clearlytraced. The Alexanders of Ireland were evidently from Scotland and, sofar as the writer can learn, they came from the South of Scotlandabout Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling. We therefore commence with someaccount ofTHE ALEXANDERS OF SCOTLAND AND NOVA SCOTIA.--Our information
concerning them is derived from "The Vindication of the Rights andTitles, Political and Territorial, of Alexander, Earle of Stirling,&c." published in 1853, by John L. Hayes, Attorney-at-Law, Washington,D. C.; and from "The Genealogy of the British Peerage," printed by theEdmund Lodge, London, 1840 and 1846.Alexander McDonald, the son of Donald, "King of the Isles," had two
sons who assumed the Christian name of their father (Alexander), as asurname for their families and numerous descendants. The tenth insuccession from one of these sons was William Alexander of Menstrie, who was a special favorite of James VI, king of Scotland, who knightedhim and made him Master of Requests in 1614. The king also styled himthe "Philosophical Poet," on account of poetical productions of highmerit.Page 197
When his royal master ascended the throne of England as James I, Sir
William Alexander accompanied him to London, and leaving his literarypursuits, devoted the rest of his life to the political affairs of theCourt. Here he rose so rapidly that "in a few years he was made aScotch peer, with the title Lord Alexander of Tullibodie, thenViscount of Canada, Viscount and Earle of Stirling and Earl of Dovan, and was invested with large estates in Scotland and vast territoriesin the New World. Charters were granted giving him vast political andadministrative powers as Hereditary Lieutenant General of all NovaScotia and Canada. He was also made Justice General, Lord of Legality, and Hereditary Steward. On him was conferred the power of makingofficers of State and justice, of conferring titles of honor, ofcoining money for his colony, and of appointing one hundred and fiftybaronets of Nova Scotia, who should take precedence of all otherBaronets. He actually created over one hundred baronets, so thatnearly fifty of the existing baronets of England, Scotland, andIreland, hold their titles from patents granted by William Alexander,Earl of Stirling." The Charter of his great power in the New World wasrenewed and enlarged by King James in 1621, "on account of the greatand acceptable services of our beloved counsellor, Sir WilliamAlexander, Knight, who first of our subjects, at his own expense, endeavored to plant this foreign colony," &c. The King here refers toNova Scotia, which, prior to 1621, the Earl had planted and maintainedat his own expense. Subsequently he continued strengthening andfortifying that colony, and sent his son to superintend the work. Thisson lived twelve years at Port Royal, as GovernorPage 198of Nova Scotia.
#3467 William was born at Stirling in 1580, and died in London in
1640, and was buried in Stirling. When France wrested Canada from the hand of England, the Port Royal
Colony was broken up and the colonists, among whom were families ofAlexanders, were driven south of Canada into other English colonies ofAmerica. Thus Canada was lost both to the Crown and to the Earls ofStirling. In Scotland, also, their estates passed into other familiesduring the civil and religious revolutions, confiscations andpersecutions which rent that distracted country during the centurythat followed the death of the first Earl. Both this family and theirclan were widely scattered.#3460 John Alexander, the fourth son of William, went to Ireland, and
settled in Londonderry in 1646. His son#4336 John, (called John of Antrim,) after spending many years in the
German universities and at foreign courts, returned and settled inAntrim, where he died in 1712."He was a man of such endowments and attainments as added lustre to
his noble birth, and was universally respected for his piety andbenevolence. As a father, most indulgent; as a friend, warm sincereand faithful. He died at Temple-Patrick, county of Antrim, 1712."This quotation is from an inscription on his tomb at Newtown-Ardes,

#5682 John of Dublin, sixth Earl of Stirling, de jure, being pious and
highly educated, was first a Presbyterian minister inStraford-on-Avon, England, and afterwards became head of a college forthe education of young ministers in Staford, county of Warwick,England. He retired to Dublin and died there, Nov. 1st, 1743.John of Dublin left two sons,

29th, 1765, without heir; and#5821 Benjamin Alexander, (Earl de jure,) a celebrated physician of
London, who died unmarried, April 18, 1768.With these two brothers the descent from William, in the male line,
became extinct, but it is continued in female lines.#5822 Hannah, daughter of
#5422 Henry Alexander, the fifth Earl, became Countess of Stirling (de
jure,) and married#5823 William Humphreys. Their eldest son, assuming the title
#5824 Alexander Alexander, commenced prosecuting his claims as the
ninth Earl of Stirling in 1826. Having completely established hisclaims to the hereditary titles and honors as the lawful heir of thefirst Earl, he was admitted to a seat in the House of Lords in 1831.Had he been satisfied with the titles and honors of his ancestor
William, he and his descendants would have enjoyed them peacefully. But when he preferred the immense property claim in Scotland, and inAmerica, including Nova Scotia, Canada, and a strip of territory 300miles wide extending from the mouth of the St. Lawrence along thegreat lakes, and through to the Pacific, a great suit was commenced bythe crown to reduce his titles and claims, which continued until 1845,when the resources of the defendant being exhausted, it was leftundecided. This was a second attempt at regaining the honors and prerogatives,
for in 1758, while Canada was still in the hands of the French, acertain William Alexander appeared in England prosecuting his claimsas lawful heir of the first Earl of Stirling, but failing to prove hisdescent to the satisfaction of England, his claims were rejected. THE ALEXANDERS OF SOMERSET CO., MD.--As early as the year 1665 some
settlers of this name began to purchase land in the most southerncounty of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. They seem to have formed aconsiderable portion of that Scotch-Irish element which constitutedthe first three Presbyterian churches of America which were organizedby the Rev. Francis McKemmie towards the close of that century. Therecords of the Land Office at Princess Anne show that the Alexandersincreased in that county and became quite numerous for about onehundred years, after which they began to disperse and continued tomigrate until at the present time there are probably none of the nameresiding there.Page 202About 1675

  23. Title: History of Cecil Co., Maryland by George Johnston Elkton Mayland 1881

    Author: George Johnston 1881
    Publication: reprinted 1998
Text: History of Cecil County by George Johnston tells about early New
Munster, includes much on David Alexander and a William Alexander mar.to Araminta, From the History of Cecil County by George Johnston we learn that in
1723 many of the inhabitants of Milford Hundred which then embracedthe northeastern part of the county, petitioned the court for a roadfrom the New Munster road at David Alexander's, across the main freshof Elk River at Stephen Hollingsworth's mill (which was the mill onBig Elk west of Cowantown.) to the church at North East. A few monthsafterwards they presented another petition stating that the road wasdifficult, dangerous and troublesome to maintain by reason of crossingthe east branch of North East twice and that it was only intended fora bridle path and that a cart road was much needed and might be madeby a much nearer route and Etc." An interesting find in Chapter XIII of Francis Cooch's, Little
Known History of Newark, Delaware and it's Environs (pub. 1936) ismention of "The Seven Stars" tavern and inn, found in the community ofAppleton, called Dysart's as far back as 1792 and later Fox Chase. The section of the County in which it is located was not then known asthe Fourth or Fair Hill District, but as North Milford Hundred by1770. This area which was part of New Munster is located in theNortheast corner of Cecil county, about three miles west of Newark andtwo miles south of Mason and Dixon's line and at the intersection ofthe Old Nottingham road, later the Telegraph road and the road leadingfrom Elk Landing to New London and points north. This old buildingwhich when Cooch wrote the book was still standing and thought to beover 200 years old. This inn was at the intersection of two importantroutes of travel where farmers could haul their excess grain and othercrops south to tidewater Elkton for shipment to Baltimore. Coochtraced the title of the property from Edwin O'Dwire down to CatherineDysart. He states that one of the New Munster claimants was DavidAlexander, weaver, who obtained a deed for about 152 acres, 95perches. David Alexander, dying left the property to his children,Aaron and Ann Alexander who on March 18 1750/51 conveyed the same toWilliam Longwill whose daughter, Margaret Dysart inherited. In 1820she conveyed the property to her children, Catherine and Levi Dysart..The farm today includes about the original acreage."At the present time (1936) it is said the farm with the Inn contains
about 150 acres or just about the same acreage conveyed by ThomasStephenson to David Alexander in 1714, but I am told that at one timethrough various other purchases, the tract included 300 acres andstretched west on both sides of the Nottingham road all the way to thebig Elk Creek."

I have been researching my husbands ALEXANDER line for many years. My
husbands gggggrandfather was Philander Alexander married to Elizabeth
Cunningham Harris. Philander's oldest brother is listed as Alphonse
Alexander married to Bessie McKinley. Their father was William Sample
Alexander married to Elizabeth Alexander. His father was Hezekiah
Alexander married to Mary Sample. Hezekiah's father is James
Alexandermarried to Margaret McKnitt. Etc. I also have some more on the
parentsof Elizabeth Alexander, Mary Sample and Margaret McKnitt. This
information was mailed to me by the Mint Museum of History in
Charlotte,NC. The Hezekiah Alexander (Rock) house is in Charlotte (Mecklenberg
Co.) NC. Unfortunately, I am completely stuck on Frances Cunningham
    Harris.
