Iona White direct descentand of Curtis has notes that he married three times. His first wife, Christina Reed was the mother of all his children except Elizabeth b. May 4 1861 to the second wife "Bessie"(Catherine Cullar). The story is told in the family (and by different branchs of the family) that the second wife did not want to care for all the children Curtis had so one day she grounded up some glass and put it in a pie she was dixing for the childrenn. The daughter, Mary saw herdo it and she told her father and that was the end of the marriage." The third wife was Mary Brugh. She had a son, Jim, at the time Curtis married her in Warren Co. MO. Iona has a copy of a letter written by Nelson True her son, Hiram True and wife, Mary Downs True, telling them of her father's marriage in Warren Co. MO> It was after Hiram & Mary had moved to Atchison Co., but before Nelson True left Warren Co., and came to live in Atchison/Holt Co. This marriage took place on May 27, 1872. The Holt Co. Cemetery book give Mary Brugh's maiden name as White. The son, Jim Brugh, owned the farm where my (Iona White) folks bought when I was in the sixth grade. Mother had always heard within the family there was some connecion between the Brugh family and her True family but she did not know what the connection was. In my researching I got the peices figured out. After Curtis Downs died(he was buried in the True family lot with daughter) Mary Brugh Downs married Wilson Swan She outlived him. His children buried him at Mt. Hope Cem. Corning, MO. Mary Brugh Downs Swan lived a few years with her son, Jim, but then she took her own life by going down to the Tarkio Creek near the house and drowning herself. She is buried a Tharp Cem. in lot with her son(not with Curtis Downs). I have a letter weitten by Mary Brugh Downs Swan on Feb. 24 1889 to Mary Downs Ture. She was telling how much she was suffering. She died Dec. 20 1900. His birth and death are recorded in the Downs family bible in the possession of Iona Gomel White. Birth also recorede q988dIGI.OH pg 14,660.
