They then returned to Jenninngs Co. and he thought maybe the 1850 census would show us if any of their children were born in Iowa and this would prove or disprove the information. Well, it seems that all of the children had the abbreviation IA after their names. I asked the librarian in the genealogy department about this. She informed me that the abbreviation for Indiana was IA until Iowa became a state. She looked it up and Iowa became a state in 1846. However, all the people in Spencer Twnship are listed as having been born in IA. So we don't think the census taker used the proper abreviation for Indiana and used the old IA meaning Indiana and not Iowa. This is what the census showed. They had been out there about 10 years. Brother's Sameul, Robert, and Owen died in Iowa. Weather they all went out together in 1840 or so it is unknow at this time. Also weather they actually lived in Jennings County before going to Iowa is unknown, but they did own land in Jennings County as early as 1838 although the 1850 census shows at least George was still in Ohio as his daughter, Harriet was born in Ohio in 1838. ============================== INDIANA DEATHS, 1882-1920 VITAL RECORDS George Downs died June 15, 1889. DOWNS concluded to unload his shot gun... The "mud daubbers" had filled the barrel with mud, which had dried in, and when Mr. Downs fired, the cylinder bursted, a piece of it hitting him on the eye. It is feared that the sight is gone, as he has been unable to see any with it since the unfortunate occurrence. - Sentinel. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- George Downs Sex: M Birth: 18 Mar 1815 in Jefferson Co, OH Death: 15 Jul 1889 in Fulton Co, IN Fact 1: Jul 1889 Buried in Rochester IOOF CEMETERY, Rochester, Fulton Co IN Fact 4: 26 Sep 1850 Census Spencer Township, Jennings Co, IN page 180 Fact 5: 9 Jul 1860 Census Geneva Township, Jennings Co, IN page 20 Fact 6: 29 Jul 1870 Census Rochester Township, Fulton Co, IN page 7 Note: Date of Death taken from Fulton Co IN death records 1882-1920 Date of marriage taken from Anns obit ======================================================================= Jim Downs PO Box 146 Rochester, IN 46975 ==================== JoEllen Bendall 6714 Gateshead Lane Indianapolis, IN 46220 317/254-8920 ========================== JoAnne Bendall (Mother to JoEllen above) 1332 W. George Downs is mentioned as a premium winner at the sixth annual Fulton County Fair held in October. Also John Downs is mentioned. This could have been brother John Hall or son John Dan. FULTON COUNTY EXCERPTS 1858-1864 pp 122-123. As Lenard Downs is mentioned in the Newspaper a year later, I sirmise that George and sons Lenard and John Dan Downs and possibly other family members came to Fulton County together earlier in 1863 and possibably before. These three were the only ones to make there notice in the newspapers or elsewhere that I can find. =================================== ROCHESTER SENTINEL,Saturday, December 15, 1877 LIST OF LETTERS remaining in the Rochester Post office for the week ending Dec. 15th, 1877: Belle Alexander, Anna BELL, Elizabeth BOYER, Sophia CARTER, Mary A.
