If you read the letters that William sent to his brother Benjamin at the time of his mothers death, it says Berlin, January 29th AD 1856.She died on Jan. 27th 1856 and William and his family came to Indiana soon after. I'm confused. Is the Anna you are talking about Curtis's wife?If not, who? Also, I picked up that Amish paper I always get and in there is a story about how they are cataloging the geneology of the Amish in Wooster. It is called the Swiss Anabaptist Geneological Association. You can reach this Assoc. on a web site. omii.org. YOu once again have to join and pledge yourself to secrecy but it is an avenue to check into. I am still trying to decide how much benefit I will get if I join. They say it is only open to qualified researchers and I probably don't qualify. Nell Ann

Jim,
Finally got into the emailing pastime. I saw an AIS Census Index: Pre-1790
advertised on the internet recently and thought I should see if anyone else
has taken a look at it before ordering. I am such a novice at all of this I
hardly know where to begin.
WAnted to let you know that Mother died August 5, 2001 here in Seymour and
was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in Jennings County. She slowly
deteriorated the last two months and her quality of life was definitely gone.
We all remember her wonderful sense of humor and miss her terribly.
Hope this finds you and Cheryl well. Talk to you later,

FROM NORTH VERNON NEWSPAPER 1892 HAYDEN
We agan have to record the sad news of the sudden death ofanother old and respected citlzen. Mr. Wm. Downs aged about 72 years, frove up his cows last Freday evening, and when he arrived at his home sat down on the door step and complained of feeling tired. He gradually sank away and expired in a few moments. His death was similar to that of his brother Ben, who died about five months ago. Mr. Downs left a wife and several sons an;d daughters, grand children and great grandchildren to mourn his loss. He was followed to his last resting place in the new Hayden cemetery last Sunday by a host of his friends and neighbors. there was no funeral service. Hummmm

Wow, was I surprised to learn of another Horace Downs from Jennings County.
My grandfather, Horace Greely Downs, was born in 1854 probably in Ohio. He
came to Jennings County Indiana as a small child with his parents, William
and Elizabeth Shidler Downs.. Horace Greely married Caroline Speckner in
Jennings County and they had a son named Horace Greely Downs, "Uncle Jack" to
me, born in 1898. Their son never had any children and died in Colorado in
1969. My great grandfather was an avid reader and named his son after the
famous journalist, Horace Greely.
Hope this helps clear up our family connection. Sincerely, Judy Smith
