The area of Salt Creek township, south of the treaty line ( Greenville Indian treaty Line of 1795 ) before 1825, was a part of Berlin Township ( Berlin was organized as a part of Coshocton County, on March 20 , 1820 and its tax was paid in and it was under the jurisdiction of authorities at Coshocton until 1825.
That part of Salt Creek Township north of the treaty line was a part of Salt Creek Topwnship in Wayne County, which had been organized on March 15, 1816. the organization of Holmes County, in 1825 included the part north of the treaty line thus creating present Salt Creek Township, and retaining its former name of Salt Creek, and leaving both Wayne and Holmes Counties with a Salt Creek Township.
Salt Creek Township icnluded surveyed township 14 and part of township 15 in range 12, as the party lying north of the treaty line. A will does not exist to my knowledge for Curtis and not a lot is known about him. Nothing is known of him his first 32 years of his life at which time in 1808 he married Ann Hall. I'm guessing but it is very possible that this was not his first marriage, but I have no proof. He is mentioned again in "Stark Co. History 1881" as being a character member of Pigeon Run Baptist Church in Tuscarawas Township in about 1810. Luckily in 1976 I literally stumbled across his grave in an abandoned graveyard near Mt. Hope Ohio. I had found information concerning him being buried there while at the Ohio State Library in Columbus. Again luckly the stone had been face down in the dirt and his birth and death dates were saved.

This cemetery was rediscover in 1977 by me a descendent of Curtis Downs and Ann his wife. It
was overgrown with brush, ivy, and trees. Many of the stones were broken and face down and
only the bases remained. Through the efforts of many including the trustees of Saltcreek Twp.,
Holmes Co., Ohio the cemetery has been restored with many stones reconditioned or replaced.
Starting in 1998 and every other year there after there has been a Reunion held in Holmes Co.
We hope you will join us this year 2002, June 21-22-23. Contact the writer for details.
