Individual:
Rappahannock County, (later Richmond), Virginia order book, 2686-2692, page 77, on April 4, 1688, William Colston was granted a certificate for having importe d 36 persons to Virginia, one of them was James Cowhard. This importation most likely happened before January 12, 1587 for on that date, James Coward was a wi tness on a deed for Mary Coolidge, Coward-Cowart Chronicles by Robert J. Robins on.
James Coward (the immigrant) is recorded in Old Rappahannock Co., VA Or der Book (1686-1692) as having been "imported" by one William Colston, along wi th 35 other immigrants on April 4, 1688. Although the name Cowherd is recorded in use in Somersetand, Dorset Co., England, during the 17th Century, there is no proof of connection between those families and our James Coward. It is uncl ear just when the spelling as Cowherd originated, buttradition credits the chan ge to james Cowherd/Coward II. Old Rappahannock Va, was formed in 1656. It wa s extinguished in 1692, to become Richmond and Essex. In 1720, Spotsylvania Co . was fromed from Spotsylvania, and in 1748 Culpeper was formed from Orange Co. In 1792, Madison Co., was formed from Culpeper. The defelopment of the Cowhe rd families center around Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper and Madison Counties e venthough there began circa 1790 a westward movement of the family, notably to Kentucky, Missouri and Kansas. I has been impossible to construct a definite a nd authentic record of all the children of James Coward and Mary Collidge. Onl y those documented in the Virginia Counties of Spotsylvania, and it's successor counties of Orange and Culpeper are included. The children listed here may no t be entirely correct or given in chronological order.
