Leonard graduated from eighth grade of P.S. 100 in Malcolm at age 12.
Leonard's first year in high school was in Lincoln at the old McKinley High school in 1918. His sophomore year was in the new Lincoln High School building. He graduated from high school in 1922 on or before his 16th birthday. 1923: he went to California with some friends in a Model T. They had to back over some of the Rocky mountains. He later sent his dad a telegram: "Need $75 by tomorrow or my name is mud." Selden thinks his father sent the money. Shortly thereafter, Leonard came back. Leonard went to the U. of Nebr. for one year or less, with a view of becoming a pharmacist. In 1927, Leonard's father, Frank, asked Leonard to come to Malcolm to help operate the grain elevators and lumber yard that Frank had just re-purchased. Leonard and Kathryn moved to Malcolm at that time. Leonard and Kathryn were living in Malcolm in Feb 1930 when Harold was born, but moved to Lincoln when Harold was about one year old, in Feb 1931. Leonard commuted to Malcolm here he continued to work at the grain elevator and lumber yard The family moved back to Malcolm the next year. Leonard put his mathematical expertise to good use in 1933 in estimating grain bin capacities for the CCC agricultural loan program. In 1935, he built the brick house north of the Community Hall. He was a leader in building the Hall. [Latitude and Longitude of house: 96.86521 40.90878] He played second base on the Malcolm town team for many years. In 1941, the team won the Blue Valley championship. Leonard and his brother, Selden, played against the Harlem Globe Trotters basketball team in the Community Hall in the 1930s. Ticket receipts did not cover the small guarantee given the Globe Trotters. Leonard and family moved to Lincoln in 1940 for six months and again in 1941 permanently, initially to run the Davey Cash Coal Co., 1750 R St. He went to Wichita, 1942-3, to work for Boeing. He resumed working at the grain co. in Malcolm and Woodlawn while continuing to reside in Lincoln. Leonard took over sole control of the Davey Grain Co. when his father retired, c. 1951. He had been a grain broker in Lincoln for a few years prior to 1951. Leonard was an expert pool player, winning the Lincoln city tournament in the 1920s. He continued to play competitive pool in his later years, winning at least 6 Elks Club trophies, 1961-4. He also was an ardent card player: bridge, poker, pitch. Leonard was attending the Nebraska-Colorado football game in Boulder when he was stricken with a fatal heart attack.
