Individual:
James Robinson, son of Thomas and Sarah Robinson. was baptized in Scituate, March 15, 1689-90. He resided for a time in the Boston home of his grandfather, Deacon Thomas, which he inherited. That property, which was located on what is now Washington Street, he sold in February, 1712, and purchased a house on what is Boylston street. This property he sold in April, 1714, and removed to Rochester, Plymouth County, which was then the residence of his wife's brother, the Rev. Timothy Ruggles. In 1757 he exchanged his farm in Rochester for property in Hardwick, where he died shortly before March 11, 1762. He was married July 2, 1711, to Patience Ruggles, of Roxbury. Their children were: James and Thomas, who were born in Boston; Thomas 2d, Samuel, Sarah, Dorothy, Denison and Hannah, who were born in Rochester. The mother died in January, 1768, aged seventy-eight years. As previously stated, she was the sister of the Rev. Timothy Ruggles (Harvard College, 1707), who was ordained pastor of the church in Rochester, November 22, 1710. "He held high rank in the ministry and was pre-eminently a man of business. He was apparently more active and efficient than any other individual in promoting the settlement of Hardwick. Through his influence and exertions six sons and a daughter of his own family, and five sons and two daughters of his sister (who married James Robinson), and their father and mother, late in life, were among the early settlers in Hardwick." He married for his first wife, Mary, daughter of Benjamin White, of Providence, Rhode Island, who died January 22, 1749, and in the following year he married for his second wife Anne Woodworth, of Little Compton, Rhode Island. Among his children was General Timothy Ruggles (known as the brigadier), who was born in Rochester, October 20, 1711, and became one of the most prominent early settlers of Hardwick. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1732 and became a lawyer. He figured in history as a prominent military commander in the service of the crown, and took a conspicuous part in the early French and Indian wars. His property in Hardwick was carried on after the manner of estates of English country gentlemen, and was divided into several farms. His allegiance to the crown was never severed, and as a consequence his Hardwick property was confiscated during the revolutionary war. He had previously purchased a large tract of land in Bennington, Vermont. This he settled with people from Hardwick, including representatives of the Ruggles, Robinson, Barnes, Paige, Spooner, Hillman and other families. He finally went to Wilmot, Nova Scotia, where he died August 4, 1795. He married Bathsheba (or Bathshura), widow of William Newcomb, and only daughter of Hon. Melatiah Bourne, of Sandwich. (Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, pp. 343-344)
James the father was a housewright; he inherited the homestead on Washington Street, Boston, which he sold 7 February 1711/12, and bought a house on the southerly side of Boylston Street; this also he sold 12 April 1714, and he removed to Rochester, attracted probably by the fact that Rev. Timothy Ruggles, a brother of his wife, was there settled in the ministry. He resided in Rochester until the spring of 1757, when he exchanged his farm in Rochester for another in Hardwick, where several of his children had already settled. Of his eight surviving children Dorothy alone remained in Rochester; all the others were in Hardwick and Barre. His residence here was on the road to Ware, about two miles from the Common, at the place marked "Mr. Leonard" on the Ruggles Map. He died shortly before 11 March 1762 (when his will was approved), aged 72; his widow Patience died __ January 1768, aged 78. (Paige, p. 471)
22 September 1713 the Selectamen of Boston "appointed abd empowered Mr. James Robinson, house-wright, to inspect and endeavor to prevent the abuses of hucksters and others in forestalling the market and engrossing provisions, and to prosecute all such persons as shall transgress the by-laws and orders of this town ruling, and in case he diligently intend and perform such sservices, henceforth until the 25th of March next, the Selectmen shall allow him the sum of ten pounds as a reward for the same."
