Page Co., VA in 1880.

According to a conversation with John Robert Cameron, Jr., Mar 23,'88
John Robert Cameron, Sr., referred to Correna (Young) Cameron as "Cot ton's (ie.,
Lloyd Cameron) woman. He predicted that she would have twins--a bo y and a
girl. At the McClosky lease where John Robert Cameron worked as a pu mper he
told Kirkpatrick (Carter Oil Co. farm boss) that Paul Cottrell knew h ow to
properly treat the crude oil that was being produced there. The resu lt was
that Paul came from Augusta, KS, to work for the Carter Oil Co.
John Robert Cameron later was a tank builder for Black & Cibil.

!BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
John Robert CAMERON (ID# 4) was born at "River", Page Co., VA, o n Friday,
17 Nov 1865, just seven months after the end of the Civil War when Ge neral Lee
surrrendered at Appamatox Court House, about 100 miles south of Joh n Robert's
birthplace. Even though his obituary lists his year of birth as 1864
evidence such as census data, county birth records, headstone inscrip tion,
recollection of relatives, etc., shows that he was born a year late r in 1865.
ANCESTORS
He was the son of William Robert and Elizabeth (Bailey) CAMERON. Wil liam
Robert was born 22 Sep 1818 in Rappahannock Co., VA, the son of Danie l and
Sarah A. CAMERON. Daniel was born 1789/1790 in Virginia and Sarah M . was born
1793 in Virginia.
A QUAKER?
His son,John Robert, Jr., says that his father was raised as a Quaker , but that
is yet to be verified.
EARLY YEARS
The 1880 census shows that, at the age of 14, John Robert was li ving with
his widowed mother in Springfield Magisterial Dist. According to hi s son,
John Robert, Jr., he left home about the age of 17, about 1882, to wo rk as a
highway builder.
THE RUN
In 1893, when the Cherokee Strip was opened for settlement, Joh n Robert,
one brother, and an uncle started with a team of horses for the Chero kee Strip.
Near Independence they ran out of money and had to sell the team fo r needed
money and return home.
In 1890 Oklahoma was organized as a territory and Idaho and Wyom ing became
states.
MARRIAGE
At the age of 27, he married Jessie Thornburg, daughter of Rober t and
Gennette (Rockwell) THORNBURG, in Findlay, Hancock Co., OH, 18 Nov 18 91.
Benjamin Harrison was President. They lived in Findlay where their si x children
were born--the last one in 1903.
The Findlay City Directory for 1889-1890 shows a "Robert CAMERON " working
as a helper at the Salem Wire Nail Co., and boarding at 508 Clinton S t. Since
we know that he was a laborer for that same company in the 1897-189 8 City
Directory it is quite likely that the 1889-1890 reference was for thi s same
person.
During the period 1894 to 1902 the family lived at 529 Crystal A ve. It
was during that period when George Thomas died of scarletina at 6 yea rs of age
on 21 May 1898, and about two years later James Frank died of burns a t the age
of 3 and one half years on 3 Jan 1900 in a "Terrible Accident". Se e the
account in the 11 Jan 1900 edition of the "Findlay Weekly Jeffersonia n".
Since John Robert and Jessie lived at 529 Crystal Avenue the referenc e to "Eben
Avenue" in the news article needs some explanation. Actually Eben Av enue
intersected Crystal Avenue just three house-lots from 529 Crystal Ave . The S.
J. Coles [Cowles] lived on Eben Ave. just 3 house-lots away from the
intersection. It is possible that the backyards were in close proxim ity. Jesse
was six-months pregnant with Lloyd at the time of the accident. Furt hermore,
Lennie was just not quite two years old at the time, so she quite li kely
accompanied her mother on the shopping trip.
The tragedy occurred less than two years after the death of her s ix-year
old son--George Thomas. The loss of the two sons in this period mus t have been
devastating.
According to Findlay City Directories, before living at the Crys tal Ave.
address they resided at 1304 N. Main and at 331 Midland Ave. Note, ho wever,
that the directory does not show Jessie in the tabulation for these t wo
addresses. The last City Directory listing found for the family wa s in the
1902-1903 edition where their address was shown as 519 H Street.
MOVE TO KANSAS
By 1907 they had moved to southern Kansas where they lived alter nately at
Neodosha, Coffeyville, and Caney. Just across the border to the south,
Oklahoma joined the Union Nov. 16, 1907. He worked for the Cheyenne G lass Co. &
the Caney Glass Co. who made window glass. Since they did not opera te in the
summer, he also had other odd jobs.
JESSIE DIES
On about 23 February 1907, At the age of 35, Jessie died (in Can ey, KS) of
Perotonitis after a miscarrage. This left him with the four survivin g children
to rear. The hired domestic help was not steady, so the job of bein g the
sorrogate mother fell on Nettie, the oldest (13 year old) daughter . Case
workers attempted to remove John Robert Jr., from their care. Each S aturday he
would buy a gallon of whiskey made in Joplin. He was a dedicated fam ily
provider and never drank during workdays. He was a jolly drinker--nev er abusive.
When asked why he never remarried he replied that The Lord made onl y one
"Jessie".
MOVES TO OKLAHOMA
He moved to Kay County, OK, probably about 1918. He was a pumpe r on the
McClusky oil lease. Later he was a tank builder for Black & Cibil . By the mid
1930's, at age 70, he was retired and living in Newkirk, Ok.
FINAL DAYS
His final residence was with his grandaughter, Margaret (Cottrel l)
Nickeson at 506 South Second St. in Ponca City, OK. Her husband wa s in the
armed service at that time. John Robert, Jr., who was working for th e Santa Fe
Railroad, was also residing there. At the age of 79 John Robert die d at the
local hospital 28 Mar 1944. The Roy Hill Funeral Home of Ponca City , OK, was in
charge of the services. Paul Cottrell, his son-in-law, paid the mana ger
$175.85 for the expenses in full.
The country was in the throes of World War II, and the D-Day
of the Normandy invasion was only about 9 weeks away. This restricte d travel
to his funeral. He was buried at Sunnyside Cemetery, Caney, Montgomer y Co.,KS.!CENSUS:1870-Federal Census population schedule, Springfiel d Twp., Page Co.,;
