!BIOGRAPHY Revised 30 May 1992
compiled by her son: Robert W. Cameron
Correna Beatrice (YOUNG) CAMERON
Correna Beatrice YOUNG was born 28 Mar 1900 on her parents far m near
Oxford, Sumner Co., Kan. She was the seventh of nine children. Sinc e her
birth was not formally recorded, an item in the local newspaper anno uncing
her birth is used to verify the event. She also appeared as an unnam ed infant
in the 1900 census.
THE MOVE TO OKLAHOMA
Correna's family moved to a farm five miles west of Kildare, Ka y Co.,
Okla, in 1907. Her father died 25 Sept. 1908, leaving her mother t o care for
the six children still remaining at home. At that time Grace, Rex , and Clara
had left home. Much of the burden of running the farm fell on her b rother,
Ross, who was only 15 when his father died. By that time the famil y had moved
to a farm a short distance (less than a mile) east of Kildare.
SCHOOL DAYS
She attended grade school and junior high school at Kildare. H orse-
drawn "Kid Wagons" (sometimes with six-horse teams when the roads we re very
muddy) were used to transport the students to the consolidated schoo l.
However, by that time the family had moved to a farm very close to K ildare,
and Correna walked to school since it was so close. Nevertheless sh e was
allowed to board the kid wagon on those days when the mud or snow wa s very
deep. She graduated from Newkirk High School 28 May 1920. While at tending
high school she had a three-room apartment with Ruth Jensen and Ruth 's
sister, however she returned home to Kildare on weekends. She ha s a vivid
recollection of being surprised on the train on such a weekend tri p by her
brother, Ross, who had just been discharged from the Army after seei ng combat
in World War I. She was a varsity basketball player at Newkirk.
After graduation from Newkirk high school 28 May 1920 she worke d for a
year in a dress shop in Newkirk and then for a year in a Dime Stor e in Ponca
City, OK.
SCHOOL TEACHER
In 1922 she obtained a certificate to teach school, and taugh t school
for one year in a one room school near Mervine in Kay County.
MARRIAGE
At that time, Lloyd Cameron worked in the oil fields surroundin g the
school. This resulted in their meeting each other, and they were ma rried 28
June 1923 in the Methodist Episcopal parsonage in Newkirk, Kay Co . The
minister was Carlton R. Wade, and the ceremony was witnessed by Mr . & Mrs.
Edgur D. Froeschle. Mrs. Froeschle was her sister, Ruby. In a 31 Ma y 1986
letter Correna wrote:
"Dad borrowed $500 from his dad, and we went to Newkirk and
bought furniture. Dad already had the company house. We w ent
the day before we were married and got the furniture. We
were married in the parsonage in Newkirk, Okla. My sister , Ruby
and her husband Edgur Froeschle "stood up" for us. We wer e married
late in the evening and spent the night in a Newkirk hotel , as Dad
was to be back to work the next morning. As you know, Da d never
wanted to lose a day's work!"
They honeymooned one night in a Newkirk hotel before moving to
a house furnished by the company which employed Lloyd in Kay County.
CHILDREN
Their first children (twins: Robert Willis CAMERON and Jessie Rosella
CAMERON) were born at Correna's mother's home on a farm at Kildare o n 8 June
1924. Correna had opted to give birth there rather than in her ow n home or
in a hospital. There were some anxious moments when Rosella, the se cond
born, required special treatments of alternating hot and cold bath s to
stimulate her breathing.
Soon they moved to an oil field near Oxford, Kan., where she be came
pregnant with Phyllis Nadine. Her doctor there was the same docto r that
attended her own birth in 1900. They lived there until shortly befo re 27 Jan
1926 when Phyllis Nadine was born in an apartment in Newkirk, Okla . They
then moved to the Rantmeier lease in Kay County.
LIFE AT THE VERNON POOL CAMP
The next move was to the Vernon Pool, one mile south of the Ka nsas
state line in Kay County north of Blackwell and Bramen. Here the ch ildren
started to school in a one room school--Plainview School, and attend ed Sunday
School at a Methodist church across the road from the school.
MOVE TO CARTER NINE
In about 1935 they moved to Carter Nine, Osage County, Oklahoma . The
camp site was on Osage Indian land in an open cattle range necessita ting
"cattle guards" on the streets and highways and necessitating high b arbed
wire fence around the camp with special gates for the pedestrians.
SHORT PERIOD AT PERRY
In about 1937 they moved to an oil field near Perry, Okla., whe re the
children attended Orlando School for a period of one year before ret urning to
Carter Nine.
TRANSFERRED TO ILLINOIS
They remained in Carter Nine until the fall of 1940 when Lloy d was
transferred to Illinois. They lived in Williams Camp, Pruett, Fayet te
County, Illinois. The children attended, and graduated from, Browns town
Community High School.
Correna and Lloyd lived in William's Camp for approximately 20 y ears. It
consisted of forty temporary houses owned by the employees but buil t on
property leased by the oil company, and ultimately removed when th e lease
expired. Many of the women of that camp had been friends of Corren a for
decades and it was a friendly social group where lifelong friendship s were
developed involving card clubs of Bridge and Canasta, along with sew ing
circles.
HOME IN ST. ELMO
They moved to a home at 110 N. Main in St. Elmo, Fayette County,
Illinois, May 1, 1964. Lloyd retired in 1965, and died of a heart a ttack 7
Nov 1971. Correna continued to live in the home until 1991, when sh e broke
her hip. A few weeks later she moved to Lutheran Care Center in Alt amont,
lL.
EXCELLENT SEAMSTRESS
Correna was an excellent seamstress, and made many of her daugh ters' and
grandchildren's clothes, which they wore proudly. She crocheted an d and
knitted profusely, and did very professional work. After her childr en left
home she did a great amount of needlecraft and stichery, and her out put was
in great demand from her friends and relatives.
SOCIAL LIFE
She remained active in clubs after moving to St. Elmo, includin g such
organizations as County Extension Club, American Legion Auxiliary, V eterans
of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and Exxon Annuitants Club. She attende d First
United Methodist Church in St. Elmo.
Until incapacitated late in life, Correna enjoyed long walks i n the out-
of-doors where she enjoyed nature.
GRANDCHILDREN
When she celebrated her 92th birthday in St. Elmo, IL, she ha d 7
grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
AN AMBITION FULFILLED
Correna and Lloyd believed strongly in the value of education , and
sacrificed so that their children could attend college. Robert gra duated
from the U. of Illinois as a Mechanical Engineer, Rosella graduate d from
Eastern Illinois University with a degree in education, and Nadine s tudied at
the U. of Illinois as an accountant.
FINAL DAYS
Even though she had survived the trauma of her broken hip she r equired
medication for heart trouble and hardening of the arteries. She enj oyed her
ninety-second birthday celebration with several of her prodigy trave ling to
the Family Rescue Restaurant in St. Elmo. Later she enjoyed Mother' s Day
festivities. With her daughter, Nadine, and her granddaughter, Beck ey, at
her side at the Lutheran Care Center in Altamont, IL, she died peacef ully the
Friday night of May 29, 1992.
Supplement to
Obituary
of
CORRENA BEATRICE (YOUNG) CAMERON
This description is intended to supplement the obituary which
appeared on page 2 of the Wednesday, June 3, 1992, issue of the
"BANNER" of St. Elmo, Illinois. Refer also to a complete
obituary prepared by her son Robert, which, among other things,
lists the names of all her prodigy. A primary purpose of this
description is to provide a specific record of the funeral.
The family members attending the funeral were:
Robert Willis Cameron and his wife, Dorothy
Jessie Rosella Jones and her husband, James Edward
Phyllis Nadine Lindsey
Terry Sue Miller and her husband Jerry
Becky Ann Heuerman and her husband, Dennis; and her children
Joshua and Lindsey
Carol Peters and her children Eldon and Emily
Kenneth Cameron and his wife Debra; and their children
Stewart and Marie.
Kay Cameron and her daughter Catherine
The funeral service began with a beautiful solo of the hymn
"How Great Thou Art". This was followed by a eulogy in which Rev.
Courtright read a biographical sketch which had been prepared by
her son, Robert. This portion was concluded by his reading of
Longfellow's poem, "Psalm of Life". This poem was one which
Correna had memorized in her youth and which she often recited
throughout her lifetime.
The congregation then sang a hymn "Showers of Blessings", a
hymn which her children recall her often singing during their
childhood while Correna did her household chores.
Then appropriate scripture was read and Rev. Courtright
attested to Correna's faith in God. He had been very close to
her in her final years, and witnessed to the fact that she had
been a source of strength to him and his family. This was
followed by a short sermon.
After an automobile procession to the cemetery there was a
short ceremony at the grave site.
