Text:
The Puryear family history, as reported by some authors, begins like so many others; "Three brothers came to America early." (No dates given.) The earliest Puryear records in America were found in Warwick County, Virginia. Ten pages of torn and parched pieces, dated May and June, 1647. Robert Puryear, of Denbigh Parish, is mentioned in a record from one of those pages. Samuel Puryear-332, the progenitor of this lineage, lived in Denbigh Parish, of Warwick County, Virginia. A record of 9 October, 1727, shows that he was witness for Samuel Noblin of Warwick County. (Wills and Deeds of Prince George County, Virginia, 1713-1728, pg. 1024.) Samuel Puryear died one year after the formation of the Ohio Company of Virginia (1747). His Will was brought ~o November 1748 Court, of Warwick County Virginia. (Warwick County Virginia Court Order Book 1748-1767, pg. 9.) It was probated May, 1749. A settlement of his estate is recorded on pp. 81-82, 1749. Elizabeth-333 died in 1755 (recorded - same source). Their son John Puryear-322, was born and most likely married in Warwick County, Virginia. He lived in Henrico County Virginia and also Brunswick and Lunenburg Counties, as the boundaries were changed, becoming part of Mecklenburg County, 1774. There are numerous records in the Deed and Court Order Books of these counties, containing copies of land transactions made by John Puryear-322. He was Sheriff and Tax Collector of Mecklenburg County Virginia (Court Qrder Books, 5 & 6, pp. 18, 127, 129, 132, and 154, 1774-1778). John Puryear wrote his Will on April, 1785. It was probated that year, in August Court of Mecklenburg County, Virginia (Will book 2, pp. 229-230). His wife Martha-323, died before 6 January, 1810 (Estate Appraisal, Will Book 6, pg. 290). Seymore Puryear-313 and Sarah Royster-314 were married in St. James Parish, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, exactly ten days before the first Battle of the American Revolution was fought at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, 19 April, 1775. Their marriage took place exactly one month before the meeting of the second Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 10 May, 1775. The following June, Virginian Richard Henry Lee, initiated a move for independence of the Colonial States. In July of the same year, Virginian Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. In the coming years, the name "PURYEAR" and "DANIEL" would be listed on many of the military rosters of Virginia. When Seymore Puryear died in 1788, Virginia, "The Old Dominion" had just become the 10th State to enter the Union. Sarah Royster Puryear-314 had a short 13 years of marriage. At the time of her husband's death, ~he had 7 young children, all under the age of 12, and was pregnant with child #8. She may have come to Tennessee with some of her sons. Bedford County, Tennessee, Deed Book M, pg. 383, 1821, records a transaction between "Sary" Puryear, and Robert Puryear. Witnesses were James-318 and Samuel-320 Purycar.
The name Puryear and its variants are originally Hebrew or Egyptian. The name Puryear is a variant of the Purryer, which is a varinat of Purrier and Perrier. The name comes Periou the younger son Budic, Count of Cornouailles, Brittany France (Referance: the book "The Norman People" Genealogical Pub. Co. Inc.) and (Bloodline of the Holy Grail by Laurence Gardner) The name traced to Parar the Gr.-Gr.-Gr.-Great Grandson of Joseph of Arimathea, who is traced to Moses who was most likely the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten Submitter: Michael D. Barnes
We find trace of the Pu Ryear name in Burgundy, France in the eleventh century. Three brothers left France at the time of the persecution of the Huguenots and went to England; two of them came to American early in the 1600s and settled in Virginia. A descendant of one of these was William Puryear Sr. The third brother is said to have come from England and settled in New England or New York State. Samuel Puryear was born in France near the Germany border. Samuel and his 2 brothers were Huguenots and fled from France to America because of religious persecution.
Note: Some place Samuel Puryear as being born in France. Other sources place him as being born in Virginia in 1694
BIOGRAPHY: John Anderson Puryear's branch and the other branches go back to two brothers, Samuel and William, who either came over from France or were born to an earlier Puryear in the Virginia area. The main trunk of the Puryear tree is Samuel and Elizabeth Puryear in the early days of the Virginia Colony. Samuel Puryear was born about 1694 in Virginia, possibly the grandson of a Robert Puryear listed in 1647 as being in Warwick, Virginia, and his name is listed as suing the Estate of Phillip Dic (son? - torn). There was also a William Pryor listed in 1638 and 1651, along with a John Pryer in 1656 records. In 1663, a Thomas Pryer. Many of the records for this area of Virginia were destroyed in the War Between the States, so no connection has yet been found.
BIOGRAPHY: This book's focus is on The Puryear's of America, and the many connected branches of Puryear's across this continent. The research in this book is built upon the excellent work of many before me, as well as, the current work of others researching the Puryear family today.
BIOGRAPHY: The family story of the Puryear name points to it coming from the Alsace region of France, however, the spelling of the name is more phonically english. Having a "y" in a surname in France was not common at all. There is the possibility that the first Puryear's lived in England for a time prior to coming to America as England had more trading ships coming to the Americas, than did France. In the early days of colonial America, Puryear had various spellings, according to Grace Hollis Puryear (author of Puryear Kin and Kin to Kin) - Prieur, Puyar, Pruyar, Proyeur, Purrier, Pyrear, Perriere, Puyear and any other possible way. These early Puryear's were Huguenots - not a term of their choice but one applied to them and their fellow believers in the Protestant faith.
BIOGRAPHY: In the days after Martin Luther's reformation, people accepting the Protestant faith caused schisms in the towns and cities they lived in. Through northern France into Germany, dual townships were created where one was Protestant and the other Catholic. Wars were fought over religious beliefs and people were persuecuted, with the Protestants in the minority. These French people of Protestant belief started leaving France because of the religious persecution. After the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572, many hundreds of them, possibly thousands, fled to England, Holland, Germany and Switzerland. Then , in 1598, the Edict of Nantes gave a religious peace to the people of that faith for most of the 1600's, but it was not to last. In 1685, that edict was revoked and the wholesale escape of refugees began, although great precautions were taken by the French government to prevent this emigration. It is said that almost half a million Huguenots crossed the frontiers despite the efforts by the police of King Louis XIV. With them they carried their wealth, their arts, skills and manufacturing secrets. This event brought a great loss of skill to the French nation and a great wealth to developing countries such as the colonies of America.
BIOGRAPHY: To date, no record has been found as to whether Samuel Puryear was born in Virginia or or if he was brought over as child with his brother, William. Samuel Puryear married Elizabeth (?) and they had seven sons and one daughter. From this Huegonut family living along the tidewater region of the James River in Virginia, all exisiting (white and some balck) Puryear's alive today can trace their lineage to.
BIOGRAPHY: Taken from the book "Puryear's of America by John (Jay) Leslie Puryear, III
