Text: The 1910 census shows Kate E age 28, married 6 years with 2 children born and 2 living.
Kate, her sisters, brother, and parents came to California in a covered wagon. After she was married, her brother Walter and her youngest son, Leo, would go to Pismo Beach and camp on the beach with the covered wagon.
When she died the covered wagon, the wheel jack for the covered wagon and several other items were donated to the Pioneer Museum in Bakersfield, Kern County, California.
Kate White was a religious woman. She refused to have a television in her home but on Tuesday and Thursday nights she would come to her son Leo's house to watch westerns. She owned a record player and would play Native American music frequently. When arriving at her home you could often hear the chants and songs of the Native Americans as well as their music.
She did not believe in a lot of modern conveniences. She used a treadle sewing machine most of her life until her arthritis became so bad that she was forced to buy an electric one. She used a tub and washboard and a wringer washer to do her laundry.
She did not like to turn on the lights in her home at night. If she was awake after dark, she would simply walk around in the dark. This resulted in her tripping on a leg of a table and breaking her hip in about 1958.
She was a good cook and baker. Her specialty were her pies and custard.
Grandma White (as her grandchildren called her) owned a Ford Model A which she loved. She made a quilt to cover her car so it would not get cold on cold winter nights. She had consideration for all things believing that they had feelings too. A trait passed on to two of her grandchildren.
She enjoyed fairly good health all of her life and remained mentally sharp until the day she died.
