Notes
Individual:
As per letter Larry Birkhead dated 6 Oct 1999 and internet data on 6 Aug 1999. The first coun
ty clerk office in Tyler County, West Virginia was held at Charles Wells, near Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia. It was held in May 1815 and consisted of twelve gentlemen justices named as followed; Abraham S. Birkhead. He was the first Clerk of County Clerk in Tyler County, West Virginia in 1815. [rest snipped]

As per letter Larry Birkhead dated 29 Jul 1999 and article from The West Virginia News Websit e dated 19 Jul 1999.
The faded pages of handwritten notes entered by the county's first clerk, A. S. Birckhead, ar e difficult to read, not only for the style of cursive handwriting used at that time, but also for the peculiar phrases and unusual spellings.

As per The West Virginia News Website dated 19 July 1999. Tyler County, North Carolina
FASCINATING TALE OF TYLER COUNTY'S EARLY YEARS BURIED IN OLD RECORDS Tyler County, North Caro lina, just 38 years younger than America and 49 years older than West Virginia, was formed from Ohio County, Virginia by an Act of the Virginia Assembly on 16 December 1814. A look at those early beginnings, through old records stored in the county clerk's office in Middlebourne, provides an interesting and enlightening account of our ancestors' lives.

Records in the courthouse in Middlebourne begin in 1815, with a Register of Marriages from 18 15 through 1852 being the earliest. The six-by-nine-inch leather-bound book is stored in a cabinet, away from the customers who daily visit the record room in the county clerk's office.

"We have just about all of our books out for our customers to use," explained Clerk Gertie Ar cher. "The marriage books, however, are so old and fragile we had them reproduced and keep the originals stored away." The faded pages of handwritten notes entered by the county's first clerk, A. S. Birckhead, are difficult to read, not only for the style of cursive handwriting used at that time, but also for the peculiar phrases and unusual spellings.

The first recorded marriage in Tyler County, Virginia was between Isaac Brown and Nancy Barn s in 1815, with only the year noted in Book 1, Page 1 of the Register of Marriages.

On 8 April 1817, minister David Smithers submitted his annual list of marriages he performe d during the past year. Before listing those betrothed in holy matrimony, he wrote a letter to Clerk Birckhead:

My Dear Sir, "After my best respects to you and your beloved consort together with your age d and honorable mother I just inform you that we enjoy middling health through mercy and should be very happy to hear of your welfare in the world and in the things that pertains to a world of eternal happenings. And I now return to you a full and just account of all the persons between whom I have solemnized the rites of matrimony within one year."

The Certificate of Marriage book, beginning in 1884, has yellowed pages that have torn loos e from the bindings, County Clerk David Hickman entered the Clerk's Certificated of marriages, typed forms with handwritten information specific to each couple's special day. Handwritten notes, scattered with misspelled words or phrases, often are found tucked into the bindings in front of certificates, representing parental permission slips.
