Individual:
The following two anecdotes appear in Ida Mary Barber's notes which were written in the thirties. (Although a few entries in the notes refer to events occurring as late as the early forties, they appear to be in the writing of her daughter, Isabel Richardson Hogg.)Grandfather and Grandmother Barber drove over the ice from Roache's Point to ? . On the way, Grandmother stopped to stay with a sick woman, while Grandfather went on. Watching him from the window she saw him go through the ice, but realizing she could not help, she said nothing to the sick woman, as she watched her husband as he struggled onto solid ice again.Grandfather Barber had bought a new cutter, something rare in those parts. An Indian asked to borrow it. So as not to offend him, Grandfather said, 'That cutter is not mine. It belongs to my wife!'The Indian asked her to lend him the cutter.' Oh, certainly!' she said.Grandfather stormed 'Why did you say yes?'' You can do your own refusing!' she said. The Indian brought back the cutter with the present of a pound of tea (in those days worth about $1.00).
