Sept. 2007, there is an 1820 Albany, NY letter written by Ebenezer Baldwin that is for auctio n on www.ebay.com . This folded lettersheet / stampless letter has a circular date stamp for NEW YORK, a 1 cent drop rate, and is addressed to Mr. Simeon Baldwin, care of Messrs Baldwin & Spooner, Merchants, Coffee House Slip, New York, and is a one page 'Dear Brother' letter written by E. Baldwin. The headline is Albany, April 13th, 1826. It appears that the letter was handcarried from Albany to New York, and then put into the mails, costing only 1 cent, thus saving a considerable amount of change / money on postage.
Docketing on a side fold says Ebenezer Baldwin.
Some abstracts:
"It would afford me great pleasure if I could visit New York at the time Rebecca is to be the re, but owing to the session of our courts at that time it will probably be out of my power."
"I have written to D. Barnes respecting his application. The Governor would appoint him on m y recommendation if there was a vacancy ..."
"Probably the purchase of a seal would induce a resignation and in that case the business cou ld be settled at once."
"I enclose a check which father sent me to purchase plaster. The [???] all amount of the chec k & its distance from home prevent me from passing it without discount." Condition of the letter rates good. Baldwins signature at the end was circled with a pencil, who knows when or why. Probably an autograph collector had this at some point in time. As usual with stampless letters, after writing on one or more sides of a sheet of paper, the letter was folded several times and mailed. Please note that most stampless letters have faults such file folds, tears at and opposite the sealing wax area, and some stains / wear / tear here and there. I hope the scan gives you a general idea of the condition.
From "Biographical Sketches of the Graduates of Yale College ...", it's noted that Ebenezer B aldwin, eldest son of the Hon. Simeon Baldwin (Yale 1781) was born in New Haven on May 20, 1790. He studied law with Harmanus Bleecker in Albany, was admitted to the bar in 1813. He held several important offices there, but on account of bad health he moved in 1828 to his father's house and occupied himself with literary work. He was military aid to Gov.
