John Franklin Weidinger was born near Darbyville, Ohio, on Thursday, 12 December 1907, and died at a nursing home in Boone, North Carolina, on Friday, 14 September 1984, at age 76 years, 9 months, 2 days. My uncle John was a self-taught sign writer and one-time aviator, who nourished my ambition to make a flying career for myself. I was flying with him in his PT-19 and BT-13 when I was 11 years old. One of the great regrets of my life was not being able to be present at his funeral due to pressing duties at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. I dedicated my unpublished autobiography to my uncle.
