Notes
Individual:
Bethanne Weidinger Slane was born on Wednesday, 8 August 1962, and died of cancer on Friday, 22 December 1995, at age 33 years, 4 months, and 14 days. The story of her final illness is a very sad highlight in my life. First diagnosed with a sarcoma in April 1994, she seemed to have cleared the hurdle of extremely complex surgery, only to have the monster return. Six days before her death, Bethanne was awarded her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Arts from the president of Capital University as she lay on her bed at the James Cancer Center at the Ohio State University. My greatest failing as a father to her was that, knowing my daughter was comatose with only a few hours to live, I left the Kobacher House hospice, feeling a strong need to be with my wife Jo Ellen at the time. It was my sister Ann Wilderness who called from Kobacher at 6:35 PM on 23 December 1995 to tell me, simply, "Jack, its over." In September 1998, I finally was financially able to provide a beautiful grave marker for her.
