Deceased was born on the Funke homestead, near New Vienna, on October 13th, 1866, and was 60 years and 11 months old when death claimed him. His boyhood days were spent in the vicinity of New Vienna, where he attended the rural and St. Boniface schools. On October 6, 1886, deceased was united in marriage to Miss Augusta Recker, in St. Mary's church at Dubuque, the late Rev. Father Johannes officiated at the marriage. After their marriage they settled down to housekeeping on a farm in Dodge Township, and they resided there until May 1st, 1926 when they retired and moved to this city to live.
Ten children were born to them, who with the sorrowing wife survive. They are Bertha, Mrs. Frank Digman, Edgewood, Ben of Greeley; Lawrence, of Worthington, Cecila, Mrs. Ben Pasker, New Vienna, Frank Jr., Greeley, Angela, Mrs. Anthon Lux, Peosta, Eleanore, Mrs. Cornelius VonLemden, New Vienna, Otto of Dyersville, Hugo and Anthony at home. Father Weihl, assisted by Very Rev. Father Warning, as deacon, and Rev. Mr. Leo Jaeger, as sub-deacon. Rev. Father Their was master of ceremonies. The pallbearers were his six sons, Messers. Ben, Laurence, Frank, Otto, Hugo and Anthony Funke. After mass interment was made in St. Francis cemetary. The funeral cortege was very large, an attest of the esteem in which the deceased was held.
The death of Mr. Funke removes from our midst one of the well known and highly esteemed residents of this vicinity. His home life was ideal, and he was a devoted husband and father. A staunch Catholic, he passed away, well fortified with it's last rites. A public spirited man, he was always ready to do his bit, toward the betterment of the community at large. For a number of years he held the office of school director, of one of the schools in Dodge Township, and has held other offices of trust, which merited him the confidence of all who had any business dealings with him.
Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved family, in this time of their sorrow.
