Individual:
The Deed Book, McMinnville, TN court house, shows that MatildaHash-Chisam, filed claim to 1/8th her father's estate in 1853. She andhusband then moved to Missouri. There, near the outbreak of the Civil War, John Jr., her husband was killed bya posse of some kind - perhaps, confederates, who disliked this Yankee (sympathizer) among them.
The widow, Matilda, together with some of her children, including "BillyBrag", made their get-a-way in a wagon; driving through naked countryenroute to her Hash family in Tennessee. Two of her sons, Tim and Clem, possibly one more, remained behind in Missouri to track down and killeach of their father's murderers. This revenge accomplished, they tookflight to the 'wilds' of texas, to their father's kinsman, "Cow-John"Chisam. "Cow-John" gave them employment and they became cowboys on his ranch. In Tennessee where "Billy Brag" had found haven, he continued tocollaborate with the Yankees. (Note: the Matt Moore episode in thisbookp. 109)
