In 1858, Leavitt was chosen as a member of the committee to judge trotting
horses at the Housatonic Fair in Great Barrington, held in September.
In August of that year, Leavitt was a member of the committee to organize the
"splendid reception" to welcome Cyrus W. Field home to Great Barrington.

Source Text: "GOING TO EUROPE.--Sheldon Leavitt, Esq., who has lately been residing in Paris, France, being called home a few weeks ago by cable telegraph, on consequence of the fatal illness of his mother in this village, will return to Europe again on Saturday, and is to be accompanied by Mr. Harry Y. Leavitt, son of H.S. Leavitt, Esq., of this village.--Gt. Barrington Courier, May 13th."
