Notes
Individual:
On Aug 7, 1847, Daniel Bourne writing to his nephew Richard N. Young regarding the history of the Bourne family, writes as follows: "About one hundred and ninety years ago (1657), my great grandfather Bourne with one brother and a sister came from England, and settled about six miles from the town of Fredericksburg in Virginia where he reared a family, and died. He left his place to my grandfather, John Bourne, where my father Francis Bourne was born. In the year 1734 when my father was only seven years of age, my grandfather sold his place near Fredricksburg, and moved to Culpeper County, about forty miles distant, and settled on the Rapidan River, it being then a frontier plain and abounding with wild game."
Source: Newman A. Hall: 30 Jan 1994 "By and large this is probably a valid record. On 26 Mar 1666 Robert Taliaferro and Lawrence Smith were granted 6300 acres on the Rappahonock River "about four miles above Ware Creek beginning on the east side of Snow Creek running up said River on the north side of said creek to a vale near the mouth of Nasaponuck (Massapomax) Creek. Among the 126 persons transported by the grantees to secure this grant were: Thomas Bone, Henry Johnson, James Harrison and John Gore (Gower)-all of whom will be mentioned subsequently. It is possible that Thomas Bone was a Thomas Bourne and could have been one of the Bournes mentioned in the referenced letter. The date is off by a few years, and a generation may have been skipped but this could well be expected. In any case the initial settlement of this Bourne Family cannot be conclusively established. However it is possible that the Bournes did come to this area earlier as reported.
In 1666 this area of settlement was in Rappahanock County. It became part of
Essex when that county was formed in 1692. Spotslyvania was formed in 1720 with Snow Creek as the eastern boundry along the Rappahannock River. Long before this time the Taliaferro family had increased its land holding to include areas bordering Snow Creek on the east. Caroline County was formed from the upper part of Essex in 1728. This area has always been part of St, Mary's Parrish.
The earliest mention of an Andrew Bourne in Virginia records found so far
is in Stafford Co., VA Orders 1689-1690 Item 570 court held 10 March 1689- 90, where "George Luke makes suit that he had made an agreement on the
fourteenth of October last with Andrew and John Bourne late of Plymouth, Devon in England to serve him for the full term of four years from April next ensuing in considering of paying their passage with their mother and one child more being the sum of five thousand pounds of tobacco---and forasmuch as the said Andrew and John Bourne did then at the time of drawing their indenture clandestinely steal away. George Luke--prays that an order for the said Andrew and John Bourne to serve according to the time profixed--."George Luke subsequently appears in the earlier records of Richmond County where he is referred to as "merchant of London". It is possible that Andrew and John completed their term of service with him in Richmond County and then moved across the Rappahanrock to Essex County where they then appear on record. This
identification is plausible but not confirmed.
On 2 Oct 1700 (Richmond Co.,VA Court Orders) "Administration is granted to
Christian Johnson upon all & singular the Estate of Andrew Bourne deced during the minorities of Peter Bourne". It is known that Peter Bourne was son of Christian who appears earlier in Richmond County records as Christian Bourne. This administration appointment strongly implies that she had been the wife of Andrew Bourne whose last appearance in records had been in Oct. 1695. (Richmond Co.,VA Court Orders 2 Oct 1695, will of Edward Price proved by John and Andrew Bourne.)
Widow, Christian Johnson, appointed administrator of estate 2 Oct 1700. Richmond Co. VA Court Order 2 Oct 17 : "Ordered that Mr. Richard Shippie, Mr. John Fisaker, Walter Francis or any two of them some time between this and the next Court held do meet and do inventory & appraise all & singular the estate of Andrew Bourne deced." The date of birth is based solely on the estimated date of birth of his son. It could be earlier but not much later.
