BARONY of BASSET (of Sapcote) (I)
RALPH BASSET, son and heir, under age in 1330. In July 1369, being
then ag ed over 40,he became, by the death of his cousin, Robert, Lord
Colvill o ne of the two coheirs of the estates and Barony of that
family, inheriti ng the Castle and Honourof Bytham, co. Lincoln,
Thornton Steward, co. Yor k, &C. In consequence, doubtless, of these
acquisitions, he was summon ed to Parliament 8 January 1370/1 and 6
October 1372, by writs directed Ra dulfo Basset de Sapcote, whereby he
is heldto have become LORD BASSE T. He fought in the French wars and
was one of the heroes of Crecy.
He married 1stly, about 1346, Sibyl, sister of Thomas ASTLEY [3rd LORD
AST LEY], and daughter of Sir Giles Astley, by Alice, 2nd daughter
andcohe ir of Sir Thomas DE WOLVEY. He married, 2ndly, Alice, daughter
of John DER BY. He died s.p.m., 17 July 1378, when the Barony fell
(according to mode rn doctrine) into abeyance between his two
daughters and coheirs. Wil l, as Ralph Basset, knight, Lord of
Sapcote, directing his buri al to be at Castle Bytham, datedthere the
Monday after the Ascension I I M ay 1377, proved at Lincoln. His
widow, who married Sir Robert TUCHET, a nd afterwards Sir Anketine
MALLORY, died a widow, 12 October 1412, and w as buried at Stamford,
