Text: Her Royal Highness Princess Marie of Great Britain and Ireland was born t
he 29th of October 1875, in Eastwell Park in England, the daughter of Prince Albert of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and of the Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. Thus, Princess Marie was a grand daughter of both Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Czar Alexander II.
Princess Marie arrived in her adoptive country in 1893, as the wife of C rown Prince Ferdinand. Her qualities quickly made her an important public figure. Intelligent and exceptionally beautiful, courageous and determined, the future Queen took part form the very start in the country's cultural life and associated her name with numerous charities.
Marie became a Queen in 1914. The First World War transformed her into a n ational heroine. She went to the front, encouraged the Romanian soldiers in the major points of the battle, and became known as "Mama Regina".
After the war she visited France and Britain; these visits, although un official, brought a lot of sympathy to the Romanian cause. Her glamour and distinction made her a world star. Her celebrity caused Romania to be well known around the world. Her visit to the United States of America in 1926 represented the summit of her popularity and contributed to Romania bring recognized and respected internationally.
After King Ferdinand died, Marie of Romania focused all her energy on t he well-being of the country during the reign of her grand-son, the King child Michael. With the Princess-Mother Helen, she accompanied the new King on all occasions, protecting the childhood of a boy obliged too soon to take the place of his grand-father.
She was profoundly hurt by the attitude of her eldest son Carol who put t he dynasty and the country in danger by the excesses of his private life.
Queen Marie was the mother of six children: Prince Carol, Princess Elis abeth (later Queen of the Hellenes by marriage with King George II, in 1920), Princess Marioara (later Queen Maria of Yugoslavia by marriage with King Alexander I, in 1922), Prince Nicholas, Princess Ileana (later Archduchess of Austria by marriage to Archduke Anton in 1931, then "Mother Alexandra") and Prince Mircea, who died in 1916, aged 3.
The Queen was very much attached to two places: Bran Castle and her hou se in Balcic, on the shore of the Black Sea. She decorated both according to her particular taste and imparted to them something of her personality. This very personal mark still endures. Cotroceni Palace, designated by Carol I as a residence for the Crown Prince and Princess, was in time transformed into a large and charming residence by the young couple Ferdinand and Marie.
Marie of Romania was in many respects an example. By her beauty and ele gance, by her charm and strength, by her devotion to her country and to her family, she was the subject of hundreds, even thousands of pages of literature in Romania and worldwide. She was the author of many books, some of them written for children, some of them autobiographical.
She died in Sinaia, on the 18th of July 1938, after a serious illness, d istressed by the isolation imposed on her by her eldest son Carol II and by his indifference to her physical and emotional suffering. She was the last member of the Royal Family to be buried in Curtea de Arges.
