Individual:
Sophia Charlotte, fifth and youngest daughter of Duke Charles Louis Fre
derick of Mecklenburg Strelitz and Elizabeth Albertin of Saxe Hildburghausen. Charlotte of Mecklenburg Strelitz; Duchess of Mecklenburg Strelitz. Appears to be "monkey-faced" in many of her portraits.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- - -------------------------------------------------------
Queen Charlotte had some African ancestors, though not very close. The
pivotal connection is Margarita de Castro, a Spaniard who married, in 1 438,
Jean de Neuchatel, Seigneur de Montagu et de Reynel (d. 1489), a Burgun dian
nobleman. Their descendants include most of the Protestant Royals, suc h as
Queen Charlotte:
Margarita -> Ferdinand -> Antonia -> Margaret -> George -> George Alber t ->
George Louis -> Sophia Albertine -> Albertine Elisabeth -> Charlotte
Those of you who are familiar with European Royal genealogies will see t hat
Charlotte actually has multiple descents from Margarita, and this is on ly
one of them. For that matter, Charlotte's husband George III is also
descended from Margarita:
Margarita -> Ferdinand -> Antonia -> Margaret -> George -> Margaret ->
Joachim Ernst -> Sophia Margaret -> Johann Friedrich -> Caroline Wilhel mine
-> Frederick Lewis -> George III
Margarita has multiple descents from an African mistress of Affonso III ,
King of Portugal (d. 1279). Here's one of the descents:
Margarita <- Mecia <- Affonso <- Vasco <- Martim Affonso II <- Martim
Affonso I de Sousa "Chicorro"
Martim Affonso I was a bastard son of Affonso III by his African mistre ss,
Magdalena Gil.
Is this descent sufficient to account for the (allegedly) Negro appeara nce
of Queen Charlotte? I don't think so, but some others have made the cl aim.

"With features as conspicuously Negroid as they were reputed to be by h er
contemporaries, it is no wonder that the black community, both in the U .S. and
throughout the British Commonwealth, have rallied around pictures of Qu een
Charlotte for generations. They have pointed out the physiological trai ts that
so obviously identify the ethnic strain of the young woman who, at firs t
glance, looks almost anomalous, portrayed as she usually is, in the sum ptuous
splendour of her coronation robes.
Queen Charlotte, wife of the English King George III (1738-1820), was d irectly
descended from Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a black branch of the Portu guese
Royal House. The riddle of Queen Charlotte's African ancestry was solve d as a
result of an earlier investigation into the black magi featured in 15th c entury
Flemish paintings. Two art historians had suggested that the black magi m ust
have been portraits of actual contemporary people (since the artist, wi thout
seeing them, would not have been aware of the subtleties in colouring a nd
facial bone structure of quadroons or octoroons which these figures inv ariably
represented) Enough evidence was accumulated to propose that the models f or the
black magi were, in all probability, members of the Portuguese de Sousa f amily.
(Several de Sousas had in fact traveled to the Netherlands when their c ousin,
the Princess Isabella went there to marry the Grand Duke, Philip the Go od of
Burgundy in the year 1429.)
Six different lines can be traced from English Queen Charlotte back to
Margarita de Castro y Sousa, in a gene pool which because of royal inbr eeding
was already minuscule, thus explaining the Queen's unmistakable African
appearance ..."
