Text: LEOPOLD George Duncan Albert, Duke of Albany was born on April 7, 1853
and died in Cannes, France on March 28, 1884. Leo was Queen Victoria's
youngest son, and he was named in honor of The Queen and Prince
Consort's uncle, Leopold, King of the Belgians. Leo was particularly
close to his ill-fated and quite melancholy elder sister, Alice, Grand
Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine.
Leopold was a hemophiliac and as such, Victoria tried to overprotect
him. The most studious of Victoria's sons, he attended Oxford
University against his mother's initial wishes. Leopold was acquainted
with the Liddell girls of Alice in Wonderland fame while he attended
university.
Leo married Princess Helene of Waldeck-Pyrmont in April 1882. Victoria
certainly never expected her son to marry and assumed he would live
the life of an invalid, but he surprised her in this matter as in many
others. He sired two children, Princess Alice of Albany, Countess of
Athlone (whose great achievement was being the longest-lived of
Victoria's descendants) and the unfortunate Prince Charles Edward, 2nd
Duke of Albany, who inherited the Duchy of Saxe Coburg Gotha after
Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.
Leo also served as a private secretary to his mother after his
father's death, providing similar administrative functions as the late
Prince Consort. Leo was the closest any of the princes came to living
up to Albert's potential.
Charlotte Zeepvat wrote an excellent biography of the Duke.
