Individual:
Later he used the name John.
"Glenn and Kin" 1994 by Jeannette May Christopher pg. 360
Dr. Burel was a surgeon with the French Army during the Revolution. When the war was over, he remained in America.
Pgs. 43-44 of "Union County Heritage - South Carolina 1981" says he was born in Ollioulles France in 1757. His ancestors were apothecaries. He was attached to the French Armed Forces in America and served under Lafayette at Yorktown.
He went north to Philadelphia where he married Patience Hannah Bird in 1785. First son Lewis(Louis) is shown in the 1850 Federal Census of Gwinnett Co, GA as aged 64 born Pennsylvania.
John (Jean) was in Union Co., SC befor 12-2-1812 when he sold a tract of land on the Enoree River to James Flanagan of Newberry Co. Patience released her dower rights on the same day. Union County Deed Book N, Pg. 94.
John's (Jean) Estate was administered in Union Co. by Randolph Jenkins in 1829, 4 years after his death. The estate paper referred to him as "Dr. John Burrell". No heirs were named, but John Burel, Patience Burel, Lewis Burel, James Hunter and Randolph Jenkins were among the buyers at the sale of his property.
Family tradition tells that John spoke English with a strong French accent and would become very impatient when other people could not understand him. He didn't practice medicine to any great extent after arriving in Union Co. He was mentioned in Randolph Jenkin's will and is probably buried wherever Jenkins was buried.
