Per Carl Oakes there was an 1841 appraisal of the personal estate of William "there being n o property but Negroes shown us" in which Charles H. Oakes, "one of the legatees to the west..." had carried off a slave who was a stricker in a blacksmith shop. This may mean Charles was another blacksmith in the family. It does mean that Charles had moved west.
