JOHN who married (OFA) EVA MARIE LITTLE who was also of
German descent. JOHN and EVA floated down the Tennessee river in 1815-16 to Nickajack
Cave near Jasper, Tenn., where they stayed about a year. In 1817, they floated on down the river
to Larkins Landing where they stayed two or three years, cutting through the canebreaks, and
then moved to the old Gross homeplace near the foot of Gunters Mountain. They were supposed
to have been accompanied by the Shells and the Chaddicks. This was two years before Jackson
County was formed in 1819. JOHN GROSS built the first grist mill on North Sauta Creek for the
Chaddicks, and this mill was run many years later by his son JACOB and his grandson JOHN
VERNON GROSS. JOHN GROSS died in 1821 and was buried in an unmarked grave in NEAL
FIELD which is directly behind the home of Dr. Coleman, between Mink Creed and Gross
cemetery and is covered by the water of Guntersville Lake.
