Individual:
In 1826 Lewis and Lydia moved to the State of Illinois for no other reason than the idea of slavery was distasteful to them. They first located in Jacksonville, but after two years removed to Springfield, where Lewis purchased a grist and saw mill on the south fork of the Sangamon River. Previous to his death, Lewis was an extensive landowner, owning several thousand acres of valuable timber and prairie land along the Sangamon River.

His wife, Lydia, daughter of Joseph Howey, was born in New Jersey, October, 1800, and likewise went to Kentucky with her parents. For some time her home was near the present site of Louisville.
