Notes
Individual:
Eva May Spinola was the first child of John and Helen Spinola. She grew up in Pleasantville, Northfield and Linwood. Mom had said things were pretty rough growing up because the they were pretty poor. Her father couldn't work a lot of the time as he was very sick. She said she always hated the smell of kerosene because she could never get the smell out of hair when she was younger.

She learned to cook at an early age. She loved to entertain. She always said if anybody left their house hungry it was their own fault. She could always feed a bunch on short notice. And it always turned out tasty. I still don't know how she could do it. She never wrote any recipes down. She just kept them in her head. There was always the 4th of July picnics, Halloween open houses and Christmas and New Years Eve parties. Most of my friends would love to stop by for Mom's iced tea and to see what she had been baking that day.

She loved to go to the movies when she was little. She said you could collect a bunch of bottles for the return money. Then you could spend the whole day in the theater. Two of her favorites were Torrid Zone and Gone with the Wind. She passed the love of old movies on to me. A few times I think she let me skip school to see a John Garfield movie because she knew he was my favorite and knew they weren't on very often.

Mom always had a soft spot in her heart for strays (both the four and two legged variety). She couldn't stand to see anything hungry. She always had a kind word for everyone. And several for the ones who needed them most.

After graduating from P'ville High school in 1942 with a major in business courses she worked on the Boardwalk of Atlantic City doing photography. Later she worked as a secretary for Curtis Publishing in Philadelphia. She said she never cared much for working. She'd always enjoyed staying home taking care of the family, house and garden. She dabbled in writing a little bit. She wrote a short story about all the animals that managed to attach themselves to her. She tried sending it to a few magazines but nobody published it.

Mom loved yard sales. She used to joke, "When I die scatter my ashes over somebody's yard sale." I used to tell her, "No I'll throw you in the backset and take you around with me to them." She also loved to go crabbing. She liked the smell of the meadowland because it reminded her of where she grew up.Edward and Eve met when they were both working at RCA. A mutual friend Mary Frank introduced them.

They eloped to Maryland. They had spent the day in Wilmington, Delaware. When they returned to the place they had rented a room they found the place locked and dark. So they had to climb in a window.
