Title: Time Line
Text:
Sources list William Henry Stutzman as William H. Stutzman, or Mr. W.H. Stutzman which is consistent to township records as Southside Township officer and family history recorded in the Kearny and Grant County History books.

W. H. Stuzman was a farmer and stockman.  William raised Percheron (draft) and other fine horses and cattle in his stables.  He was a member of the school board, township trustee (longest serving on record for over 20 years) and also served on the Southside Ditch Association.  He was an active member of the Community Club, township Grange, a Methodist, and Democrat.

He moved from Indiana to McPherson Co., KS with his father Jonathan in 1879. Married at the home of the bride's parents in McPherson Co., KS on Aug. 27, 1884 and lived there and in Pratt Co., KS until the spring of 1886.

Later moved in May 1886 with his wife and one child to Kearny Co., KS.  They lived there where the rest of their seven children were born and finally moved back to Halstead, Harvey Co., KS after October 25, 1939, following a farewell supper at the church.  William then became occupied as patrolman for the state highway department.

William's ancestors were of Lancaster Co., PA (also Berks Co., PA).  They were of the Dunkard Clan of the Amish, called the Pennsylvania Dutch.

All of the Stutzman children born to William and Luella, were born on the family farm in Kendall Township, near Lakin, Kearny Co., KS except for Grace May, who was born in McPherson Co., KS.

Title: Notes
Text:
Census records for birth date are 1863, however his gravestone
reads 1861.

Grandpa Will came out to eastern KS from Terra Haute, IN in 1866.

Grandpa Will raised Perchron draft horses in Indiana.

About Grandpa Will's arrival in western Kansas:
From the Lakin Independent (August 21, 1937)
As told by Luella Stutzman (Mrs. W.H.) about 1937

"...the move in the sping of 1886... to 160 acres of buffalo grass, five miles to a town, with five dollars in cash, a team and a harness is alright as an experience (former home was 25 miles northwest of Halstead, Kansas) to Kendall, which was then in Hamilton County.

Later, with one-year-old baby, in January went to this homestead by way of the Santa Fe Route.

Greatest blizzard had occured the preceding January and could see thousands of carcasses of cattle that perished.

We had not built our basement house yet (called dugouts).

Then the night of the first rain we used our covered wagon for sleeping quarters, as we were camping at the home of his [Will's] brother.

Title: Studebaker
Text:
Grandpa Will's raised Perchron draft horses in Indiana.
His neighbor on the farm across from his was a wheel wright.

A wheel wright was one that made wheels for horse-drawn wagons.
His neighbor later built Studebaker cars.

Will became the first authorized dealer for Studebakers in Halstead, KS.
He also sold them in Lakin, KS.

His daughters Lola Alice and Eva Marie drove Studebakers until their death.

  14. Title: Golden Wedding Anniversary - Lakin Independent
Page: dated Friday, August 31, 1934
    Entry Date: January 6, 2005
Source Text: Lakin, Kansas, Friday, August 31, 1934 Golden Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Stutzman, pioneer residents of Kearny County, celebrated their golden anniversary Monday, August 27, 1934. They were married at the home of the bride's parents in McPherson, Kansas, and lived there and in Pratt County until May, 1886, when they came to Kearny County, where they have since resided - the greater number of years having been spent in their present home in South Side Township. Mr. and Mrs. Stutzman have been actively involved in worthwhile community and county affairs down through the years as this western country developed - from the schools and Sunday schools held in the "soddies" and "dugouts" of pioneer days to the more numerous activities of the present day. Mr. Stutzman served many years on the school board and filled a township office for twenty years, and Mrs. Stutzman is now completing her fourth year as register of deeds. In former years Mr. Stutzman was an extensive stockman, taking great pleasure in caring for his horses and cattle. Recently he has been occupied as patrolman with the state highway department. Aside from a keen interest in her home and in public work, Mrs. Stutzman has found time to publish two songs and a book of poems, and she has greatly enjoyed writing for special occasions at the request of friends. Their entire family of four girls and three boys and their ten grandchildren were present at the celebration. The color scheme of gold and white was carried out in table decorations and in the menu of the two course dinner. Seated with Mr. and Mrs. Stutzman at the table with which they began housekeeping were three persons who were present at the wedding 50 years ago. They were Dr. Frances V. Hulpieu and Mr. Frank Stutzman, sister and brother of Mr. Stutzman, and N.E. Walden, brother of Mrs. Stutzman. A place at this table was laid for Mrs. Sarah Stutzman, sister of Mrs. Stutzman. Mrs. Stutzman ate from a plate - one of a set her mother used as a bride 77 years ago. Other dishes on the table were quite old, some being wedding gifts. Other dinner guests were: Mrs. Grace Warren and children, Betty and Harold; Mr. and Mrs. J.C. McClurkin and Della; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Stutzman and Everett of Garden City; Dr. and Mrs. W.B. Corley and Thelma, Lucille, and W.B. Jr. of Hutchinson; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stutzman and Alice and Frances of Lamar, Colorado; Mr. Percy Stutzman of Dodge City; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bumgardner and Beulah; Mrs. Frank Stutzman and son, Floyd, of Mt. Hope; Mr. James Hulpieu of Dodge City; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stutzman of Milan; Mr. and Mrs. Hans Vollweider and son, Frank, of Mt. Hope; Mr. Clarence Stutzman of Garden City; Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Carey; Mrs. Marie Froelich of Garden City; Mrs. Ethel Hayden of Garden City; Mrs. Edythe Coons; Miss Della James; Miss Edna Strauss; Mr. J. S. Coons; Mr. V. S. McClurkin; Mrs. Mary Smith; Mrs. Walter Patton. After dinner the honored couple opened the packages that had been laid on the table in the living room, and were made happy by the many nice gifts from relatives and friends present and one from Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Hulpieu of Indianapolis, Indiana, who were unable to attend. During the afternoon a very informal "open house" was observed, when guests were served punch and wafers. Among the afternoon callers were Mrs. Laura Kemper Dickinson and two daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Kemper and two sons, from Liberal. In the evening members of Pioneer Grange, of which Mr. and Mrs. Stutzman are members, called and presented them with a lovely plaque as a token of respect and good will. Group singing, readings, and musical numbers furnished entertainment for the evening, Miss Mae Smith rendering the very appropriate song, "I Love You Truly," which was especially enjoyed, as was also "The Garden of Prayer" by Mrs. E. R. McCue. During the day ninety-seven relatives and friends congratulated Mr. and Mrs. Stutzman and wished for them many more such joyous occasions.
