Source Text: Nancy Jane Jones Walden newspaper obituary from "The Argonian" - Argonia, Kansas
Nancy Jane Jones, daughter of Martin M. and Elizabeth Wallace Jones, was born May 26, 1838 in Randolph Co., Mo. When she was five years old the family moved to Davis Co., Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. October 28, 1857, she was united in marriage to William Henry Walden who was called home November 16, 1911. In April 1913 she came to Milan, Kansas where she lived until her sudden passing, Sunday, April 22, 1934, aged 95 years 10 months, 26 days. Two daughters, Mrs. Sarah E. Stutzman of Milan and Mrs. Luella Stutzman of Lakin, Kansas, one son N. E. Walden of Milan, 15 grandchildren, 37 gr. Grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Minerva Wheeler of Hartford, Ks. And one brother Robert Jones of Udell, Iowa survive her. One daughter, Mrs. Laura A. Elliott, died April 29, 1929.
Mrs. Walden was one of a family of 12 children. In the spring of 1874 she and family moved from Iowa to McPherson Co. Ks settled on homestead eight miles south of McPherson. While camping in a tent waiting for rain to enable them to build a sod house, the grasshoppers appeared, eating every green thing. Her husband became discouraged and wanted her and the children to go back to Iowa for the winter. She said, "No, we came west to get a home and will all stay together." Mr. Walden had studied some medical books and had a supply of simple remedies. It was not long until they were being called to administer to the sick in the pioneer homes. Many young mothers were taken care of by Auntie Walden, as she was called.
She was converted at the age of 14 and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. After coming to Kansas she united with United Brethren, later joining the Methodist church. She has been a member of Methodist Church since 1913 in Milan and was a regular attendee to the last day of her life. In 1874 a Grange was organized in King City, near the present site of Elyria, of which they were charter members. In this schoolhouse were held Sunday school and church service for the community. Mr. and Mrs. Walden were supporters of all activities of improvement of the social, religious and education life of the community. They lived to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary, October 28, 1907 on the homestead in McPherson Co.
Mrs. Walden had and cultivated the habit of looking for good in people and finding it or making the best of difficult circumstances and find something to enjoy and be thankful for every day. She loved every body and spoke of how good and kind all her friends and relatives were to her. She would often smile and say, "I have my grip packed and am ready to go home, just waiting." Grandmother Walden will be greatly missed in her little circle, but her example, her kindness, and her faith, have left us a living epistle, which admits of no argument. Funeral services were held at Milan, Kansas conducted by her pastor Rev. H.E. Sipe, assisted by Rev. Van Gundy of Wellington, and interment was made at McPherson by the side of her husband. Six of her grandsons were the active pallbearers; Claude Stutzman, Floyd Martin, Clarence Stutzman, E. E. Elliott and C. E. Stutzman. Six of her women friends acted as honorary pallbearers and placed the many lovely floral offerings on and around the casket. There were Mesdames Lillie Bastins, Park Sears, Josie Hoyt, Effie Caloway, Betty Defaugh, and Delia Baird.
