The fifth generation of Eells family lived through the Revolutionary War. Ten of them at least were soldiers in this war, and four were officers. There were four ministers all graduates of Yale. The family further separated to start branches in ME VT, the shore of Lake Champlain in , NY, and the important town of Whitesboro NY.
There was confusing intermarriage with one of the oldest families in East Hampton on Long Island. bring into the ancestry of many now named Eells descent from Rev. Thomas James and Thomas Edwards of that historic town. From this generation several daughters were married into some well known families, among them Martha Eells who became a Spencer and a grandmother of J.P. Morgan, Mary Eells who became a Candee of the famous family in Holland Patent NY (probably influenced our side of family who removed to Holland Purchase from Peru, Clinton Co. NY). Abiah Eells who married Mordecai Lincoln, whose name is the same as the grandfather and great grandfather of Abraham Lincoln, Lucy Eells who married Churchill Edwards of East Hampton, and Hannah Eells who married Dr. Henry White of Southampton Long Island, the famous Revolutionary Surgeon.
Eells Family History 1633-1952 by Rev. Earnest Edward Eells Pg 65
Waterman Eells was born July 22, 1732, at Scituate MA and baptised Aug 13, 1732. He married about 1753, Sarah Tubbs of Pembroke MA. They lived at Lanesborough MA, a few miles north of Pittsfield. After Sarah Tubbs Eells' death Waterman Eells married (2) a MS Chase. She had no children.
He was a ship's carpenter
As a "Minute Man" he enlisted in the Continental Army. The Archives Division of the Secretary of State's office in MA records that Waterman Eals (sic) served as private in Captain Joseph Barnes' Co., Col. Benj. Symonds Berkshire Co., Reg, April 26 to May 19, 1777 on expedition to Saratoga. Also in Captain Asa Barnes' Co., which marched to Manchester on alarm of July 13. 1777, a service of 15 days, and also in Capt. Wheeler's Co., which marched from Lanesborough to Meloomscug Creek August 14, 1777 on an alarm (pg 248; MA records). The same appears in the Adjutant General's office in VT. ( see "Three Centuries in the Champlain Valley, Pg 257).
He was killed in the battle of Bennington, August 16, 1777. Family tradition relates that a man who stood by his body after the battle said that a man by the name of Styles asked him if Waterman Eells was dead. He answered, "yes, he was shot through the neck". Styles said, "That is all I want to know." It is supposed that Styles, who was a Tory, took this opportunity to shoot Waterman Eells through spite, as it was proved that they had words before.
